"Saab’s top performer in a refined yet sporty package, offering impressive performance, excellent comfort, and top-class safety for its time. Well cared for and properly maintained over the years, though it wasn’t freshly washed at the inspection — a detailing will make the car shine even more (see last photo, the seller’s picture of the freshly washed vehicle)."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on June 12, 2008. The current owner acquired it in May 2020 and has driven approximately 7,500 km since then. During his ownership, the car has always been kept in a garage. It has been serviced by Mats Riesel in Solna. In addition, the fuel tank protection plate was replaced in 2021. The radiator hoses and expansion tank were replaced in 2023. This spring, all ignition coils and spark plugs were changed, and a new battery was installed. The original folder with all documentation, books, and manuals is included, along with two keys. The car passed its inspection on August 6 this year without any remarks and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and strongly in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive around Djurgården and through the city, everything appeared to function as it should regarding steering, clutch, shifting, suspension components, and brakes. During brief, firm acceleration, the power delivery felt strong. A pleasing sound experience for the motoring enthusiast.

Not inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components appeared to be in good condition. No remarks from the vehicle inspection. There are some areas with “normal surface rust,” and some underbody coverings that could not be inspected.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and well-preserved interior in original condition. The seats and rear bench offer good support and comfort. The leather is well cared for, showing only mild signs of use. Door panels, headliner, and carpet mats are all in equally fine condition. There is a small tear, a couple of centimeters long, in the trim on the A-pillar. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, gauges, and details are in very good condition. All electrical functions appear to work properly, with effective heating and cooling (ACC). Original integrated radio/audio system functions well. Tinted rear windows.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice paintwork that appears to be in original condition. The car has received paint protection treatments several times over the years. Glass, trim, plastic/rubber parts, and lighting details are all in fine, well-preserved condition considering the car’s age and mileage. Original wheels in good shape, with a small scuff on the front right, and fitted with quality Hankook tires. Engine bay and luggage compartment are in very good condition.

  • General condition:

This is a special model where Saab truly pushed the limits, creating a performance experience they claimed was inspired by their aviation heritage. A display greeting the driver with “Welcome on board, checking…” and “Ready for take-off” reinforces that feeling. As the Turbo X was produced in limited numbers — and this one comes in a classic color combination — this is a unique opportunity to acquire a true Swedish-made classic and enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

With the Saab 9-3, the company adopted the naming convention in the style of the 9-5. The new model was an evolution of the Saab 900, the version introduced as a 1993 model year.
Generation 1 of the new 9-3, produced from 1998 to 2003, was primarily a facelift of the previous 900 model. With Generation 2 and the 2003 model year, more significant changes took place. The former combi-coupé disappeared, replaced by a sedan—or, in Saab terminology, a SportSedan. The following year saw the introduction of a new Cabriolet. These models were completely new and built on GM’s Epsilon platform, which was also shared with the Opel Vectra and Cadillac BLS. As usual, Saab offered versions ranging from the basic trims to the powerful Aero models.

For the 2006 model year, a long-awaited estate version arrived—and since this was Saab, it was naturally called the SportCombi. That same year, a new 2.8-liter V6 engine was introduced. When it debuted, it was awarded Engine of the Year. This engine was part of a GM project and had initially been used in Buick and Cadillac models under the name LP1. But when the Swedish engineers—renowned for their extensive experience in turbo development and production—got involved, the engine was refined even further and redesignated LP9. It was manufactured by Holden in Australia, but the turbo unit came from Saab in Sweden. The engine was considered both powerful and reliable, producing 250 hp at 5500 rpm. For the 2008–09 model years, an additional 30 hp was extracted in the top versions of the 9-3 equipped with the LP9 engine.

Saab went on to produce several special editions, and in 2008 the Saab 9-3 X XWD was launched—a limited production run of 2,081 cars (the plan was for exactly 2,000, but a few more were built). It was offered as both a SportSedan and SportCombi, with either manual or automatic transmission. A united corps of motoring journalists gave the car top marks, with many describing it as the ultimate road and driving machine from Saab.
