Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 — 1954

The somewhat unusual epithet "bull-Merca" is the Swedish way of viewing a robust fifties Mercedes, here an early and naturally patinated example with a nice untouched and affordable potential.

"Relatively easy project/object to get into operation, primarily requiring mechanical needs and actions."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in August 1954 by Philipsons Bil AB in Hälsingborg, as it was spelled at the time. A relative of the current owner, whose parents purchased the car in 1969, took it over from them in 1995. The car has remained within a tight radius in northwestern Skåne all along. The current owner received the Merc from the relative just over 10 years ago in hopes of getting it up and running, but time has rolled by. The last inspection was done on May 6, 1975; therefore, the next time it is inspected, will be the last.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine needs to be started with starting fluid, as the choke does not seem to work properly. However, once the engine is warm, everything runs fine and well, as well as it can for an older design side-valve engine. A cleaning and adjustment of the carburetor would be beneficial. The brakes need to be overhauled, as the car has been sitting for a long time and the drums, lines, and cylinders need to be inspected. A drive axle boot is cracked.

  • Interior condition:

Entire and good clothing with slight soiling and a small wear hole on the driver's seat. Dry rubber mats that are very brittle, they have dried and cracked in several places. The handles on the doors also have the same brittle plastic.

  • Exterior condition:

Unpolished lacquer, but it appears to be original with marks and wear from the passage of time. Chrome with small chips and blisters, but still nice in relation to the rest of the car's exterior. The windows cannot be rolled down, likely the mechanisms are corroded and it should be easily fixable. Good undercarriage with a possible damage to a sill that we could see from ground level.

  • General condition:

A back-in-the-day everyday Merc in reasonably worn condition that might just need some technical fixes, one inspection, and then be used as a rugged enthusiast car.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes 180 (W120), introduced in July 1953, was Mercedes-Benz's first newly designed volume model after World War II. With its self-supporting pontoon body, it completely broke away from its predecessors. By the time production ended in October 1962, nearly half a million cars had been manufactured in various configurations. Over the years, the car had received a number of upgrades, the most important of which was probably the replacement of the tired side-valve engine from the pre-war 170S model. This occurred in 1957. The final development, the 180c/180 Dc, was introduced in July 1961. Then, the gasoline engine received higher performance through a modified valve mechanism, and the diesel version was equipped with the two-liter engine from the W110.
