"Volvo 745 Turbo Intercooler with all the right details. Chrome roof rails, the most powerful engine, manual gearbox, dark gray half-leather interior, power windows, air conditioning, and anti-lock brakes. The car also sits on the classic turbo wheels. As icing on the cake, the car is finished in graphite gray metallic. Don't let the mileage fool you – 338,000 km is not particularly high for a well-maintained Volvo 740.
According to the service records, however, it is high time to replace the timing belt. Fortunately, the engine is a "non-interference engine," which means the engine simply stops without drama if the belt breaks, with no major engine damage as a result. We recommend that the buyer replace the timing belt as soon as possible and take the opportunity to service the car at the same time."

Description

The car was bought new by a business owner in Gällivare. We can assume his painting company was doing well, considering that he treated himself and his family to what was, at the time, a very exclusive car. But driving a Volvo 745 TIC was probably a bit of a sensitive matter. So as not to appear overly extravagant and pompous in front of neighbors and acquaintances, the salesman at Eriksson Bil was given strict orders to deliver the car without the Turbo badge on the tailgate. The badge was therefore supplied loose and has been kept all these years. The car was delivered on February 10, 1989. The Volvo was mostly driven by the wife of the family. No paint cans were allowed in the cargo area, so the husband had to continue making do with his old company car. In 1995, the car was transferred into the wife's name – after all, she was the one using it. The service book is stamped by the dealership up to 60,000 km. After that, servicing was carried out privately. The odometer shows just under 338,000 km. This means the car has covered an average of 8,900 km per year since new, which must be considered sparing use over 38 years. The car's owner has now passed away, so the car is being sold on behalf of the heirs.

Included with the car are two keys, a spare wheel, and the owner's manual, along with the saved Turbo badge. A genuine Volvo ski rack and a set of studded winter tires on steel wheels are also included. The winter tires are approximately 4 years old.

This is a distance auction. Photos and information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the car in person at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a B230ET four-cylinder turbo engine producing 182 hp. The gearbox is an M46, a four-speed manual gearbox with an electric overdrive that functions as a fifth gear, operated by a button on top of the gear lever. Also equipped with ABS and air conditioning. According to a note, the timing belt was last replaced at 250,000 km, which was approximately 15 years ago, so it must be replaced due to age.

  • Interior condition

Well-kept interior with some wear. There are two classic cracks in the middle of the dashboard, on the top surface toward the windshield. The driver's seat has held up unusually well for the kilometers driven. There are some cracks in the vinyl on the side bolsters, which is significant wear for this type of interior. The headliner fabric has come loose and is sagging. This, too, is very common on cars from the 740 series. A major advantage of the station wagon is that the headliner can be removed straight out the back through the tailgate opening with relatively simple means. A knowledgeable person can then reupholster the headliner with correct fabric and reinstall it. Should the buyer have this improvement carried out, it will elevate the entire interior in a commendable way. Equipped with the working original Volvo CR-702 stereo the car was delivered with, including the upscale door speakers of the period. The air conditioning works and blows ice cold.

  • Exterior condition

We cannot say for certain whether it has received any touch-up paint over the years. Most evidence suggests that it largely retains its original paint. A well-maintained car that appears to be in better-than-average condition, considering its age and mileage. There are some scratches and minor blemishes. At the front edge of the roof, by the windshield, there is clear coat peeling. It has been driven in a salt-free area in Norrland. Please examine the photos closely for more information about the condition.

  • General condition

The car is in original condition, unrestored and untouched, with the same owner since new.

Facts about the model

What did a Volvo 745 TIC cost in 1988?
A factory-new Volvo 745 Turbo Intercooler with Air Conditioning cost around 193,200 kronor in the spring of 1988. In addition, the optional ABS (anti-lock brakes) cost approximately 11,000 kronor, making it one of the most expensive individual safety features that could be added when ordering a new car. For a sum of approximately 200,000 kronor, before any negotiated discount, the buyer got one of Sweden's absolute fastest and most luxurious family station wagons of its time.

The base price for a factory-new Volvo 740 Turbo was 173,200 kronor in 1988. This was just over 18,000 kronor more expensive than the second most expensive model, the then all-new sport model 740 GLT 16 Valve, and nearly 50,000 kronor more expensive than a standard 740 GL. Choosing the station wagon added approximately 10,000 kronor to the base price.
