Mechanical condition
Not driven for several years, but according to information provided it was fully drivable and ready to drive when last used. Naturally, it will need an overhaul and service before it is ready for the road again. It has not been inspected on a lift, but the underside is relatively visible and appeared to be in good condition.
-
Interior condition
Lovely 1920s interior ambiance with fine and comfortable leather-upholstered seats front and rear. As this is an open car, a glass panel was offered for "wind deflection" for the comfort of the rear-seat passengers. Fine door panels and trim. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges in fine original condition. We have not tested the functions.
-
Exterior condition
Fine paintwork with some wear from use and many lovely details as well as period-typical attributes. Chrome, glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are in fine condition. Fine wheels with older tires. Luggage trunk, tonneau cover, and soft top with side windows are in fine condition.

General condition
This stately motorcar sits just below the most luxurious cars of its era. At this time, Sunbeam stood for quality and built well-crafted cars with sporting ambitions. This car is no exception, and both as a whole and in its details it is an exquisite car for its time. Whether you fasten the tonneau cover and drive it yourself with cap and goggles, or bring along company for a pleasant outing, it is a marker of its era and a sought-after classic with enthusiast and collector status.

Facts about the model
In 1920, Sunbeam merged with the French firm Darracq, which had earlier acquired Talbot with its manufacturing in London, forming STD Motors (Sunbeam, Talbot and Darracq). Sunbeam maintained an extensive racing program. The most successful model was the 3 Litre, which finished second at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1925 and competed with Bentley. The company also built special cars for land speed records. But the racing program came at great expense, and in 1934 STD Motors went bankrupt.
The Rootes Group then first bought Talbot and replaced the model lineup with new cars based on Humber and Hillman models. Talbot also lived on in France after Antonio Lago purchased the French part of STD. To reduce the confusion of names, Rootes also bought the Sunbeam name in 1935 and renamed the English cars Sunbeam-Talbot. After the Second World War, production was moved from London to the Rootes facilities in Ryton-on-Dunsmore outside Coventry. What happened after that is an entirely different story.
The Sunbeam 14/40 was manufactured from 1923 to 1927 and had a four-cylinder engine with overhead valves displacing 2,121 cc. They were built as two-, four- and five-seat open cars with a soft top and removable side windows, as well as closed cars in both Saloon and Coupé versions. In addition to these "standard cars," chassis with engine and other components were sold for bodywork by independent coachbuilders. A total of approximately 2,850 examples were produced.
