"A classic Volvo rod with equally classic engine setup and period-correct technology and features. It has been well used and runs well. Some details need attention, and both servicing and reconditioning would improve its function and overall impression."

Description

T23 Roadster pickup built in Hälsingland between 1980 and 1983. The build is based on a 1964 Volvo Duett, which was registered for road use in October 1963 and reportedly served as a “Televerket” (Swedish telecom service) vehicle. The fiberglass body came from Karl-Ola Englund. The car originally had a Vedette V8, but in the late 1990s it was fitted with a Rover V8 and a Borg-Warner automatic transmission. The brakes, with front discs from a Volvo Amazon, were installed in 2003.

The current owner, a knowledgeable vehicle enthusiast, acquired the car in August 2017. He fitted Ford front fenders in 2019 and re-geared the limited-slip Spicer rear axle in 2022. Over the years, he has been a frequent visitor to rod meets and classic car events with this car. It is in fully drivable condition and inspected.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran well in both engine and drivetrain, with an impressive sound. During a short, calm drive around the neighborhood, the car performed nicely. What could be seen of the underside appeared solid and trustworthy in terms of vital components.

  • Interior condition:

Simple and user-friendly interior from the time of the rebuild. It could benefit from some attention and tidying up. Steering wheel, controls, and dashboard are in good condition and function well. The horn is not working.

  • Exterior condition:

Since the rebuild, the car has been well used and shows normal wear for its age. Some details could use attention and tidying up. Good wheels and tires. Simple soft top and a cover for the pickup bed.

  • General condition:

This car has a few years behind it now and is a period-correct rod from the era in which it was built. That’s also part of its charm — a wonderful time capsule within its genre. Drive it as it is, with a cool, used and rugged look, or refine it to suit your own taste and style.

Facts about the model

Many of us grew up reading Start & Speed, Colorod, Wheels, and other magazines during the 1970s and 1980s, dreaming of our own custom builds. Some people actually pursued that dream and built their own cars.

Hot Rod culture took off in the United States after World War II and spread here toward the end of the 1950s. During the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, many cars were built — from exclusive show cars to powerful drag racers, as well as everyday rods and customs, most often based on American cars. There were also plenty of mild customs based on models like the VW Beetle and, not least, various Volvos.

One popular approach was the Duett build. Thanks to its frame construction, it became an accessible, affordable, and relatively easy car to modify — often inspired by American engineering and styling choices.
