"From a true enthusiast’s perspective, the Magnette is a kind of sensible classic family car for a brand-loyal individual — four doors, five seats, and a"

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in Bjärred, outside Malmö, in March 1959. After an engine failure under a previous owner, the engine was rebuilt in 1972. The car’s former owner, from Kalmar, bought it in 1988, finding it stored in a barn in Oxie, near Malmö. He restored the body and drove the car enthusiastically for nearly 30 years before the current owner (the estate) took over in 2017. Since then, the car has covered just over 160 km. The most recent and final approved inspection was carried out on May 24, 2016, during a valid inspection period before the new exemption rules came into effect on April 20, 2018.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts after a short while — since the car has been stationary for some time, it takes a moment for the fuel to reach the carburetors. The choke, of course, needs to be used correctly. The gearbox works well with a nice, precise gear feel, though the positions are close together and the car prefers that a new driver learns them carefully. The engine basically shares its design with both the MGA and the later MGB models, though in the latter it came in a larger 1.8-liter version.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and fresh leather interior with neat carpets and an original Webasto sunroof in good working condition. The wood trim looks good, especially considering its age. For many enthusiasts, an older Becker Monza is an especially attractive radio — here present, though its functionality is unknown.

  • Exterior condition:

Older restoration and repaint in the original color from the late 1980s, which has held up reasonably well, though in a few places — mainly around the C-pillars — some cracking in the underlying work can be seen. Equipped with bolt-on wire wheels and older Firestone tires with good tread. One wheel bolt is missing on the right rear wheel. Four original steel wheels with old cross-ply tires are included, though without hubcaps.

  • General condition:

Charming family MG with a sporty touch, in solid, user-friendly, and pleasant condition. Easy to care for, maintain, and enjoy for a new owner.

Facts about the model

MG’s sedan model broke with all previous brand traditions. It was the first MG with a monocoque (self-supporting) body and was also fitted with BMC’s B-series engine — a pure Austin design. The body was shared with the Wolseley 4/44, but the MG sat lower. In addition, it featured improved rear suspension with a sturdy bar between the differential and the body, which further enhanced its handling characteristics.

The Magnette ZA was introduced in the autumn of 1953. Early examples had a simple metal dashboard painted to look like wood. In the autumn of 1954, an updated dashboard with real wood veneer was introduced — only then could it truly be called a “dashboard.” A total of 18,076 ZA units were produced.

In October 1956, the Magnette ZB was launched, featuring a more powerful engine thanks to larger carburetors and a higher compression ratio. Externally, it gained new chrome trim, and the luxury Varitone model was introduced with two-tone paint and a larger rear window. A total of 18,524 ZB units were built.
