Mercedes-Benz 220 W187 — 1952

Exciting object with great potential of the slightly more exclusive version of an aging model, 170S. The 220 featured a more modern six-cylinder engine that revitalized the design for a few years before the next model change.

"Important model for the brand in the post-war period in a decent basic condition."

Description

It was registered for traffic in Sweden and delivered to its first owner in July 1952. The history is unknown until the current owner bought the car for a couple of thousand kronor in 1974. At that time, he was studying in Lund and the Mercedes participated in the Carnival parade; the Carnival is a student event that is still held every spring in Lund. It was driven very little after that, but still made it under its own power to the Stockholm area and back a few times in the eighties and nineties. The last inspection was conducted on April 7, 1994, and a few years later, the car was stored in a barn where it stands today.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car last ran in the mid-nineties; since then, it has been parked in its barn. Today, at least, the engine turns over with the crank handle. With air in the tires, it should be possible to roll it out, but we don't know if the brakes are applied and locked.

  • Interior condition:

After thirty years or more in a barn, parts of the interior have been gnawed by small rodents and also have some mold. The instruments, steering wheel, and controls look better.

  • Exterior condition:

Relatively healthy in the metal with a good undercarriage and repairs/touch-ups on three of the doors. The turn signal setups on the roof appear to be from the fenders of a later model and were probably a concession to the inspection when the old directional arrows in the B-pillars no longer wanted to work. Different hubcaps on the front and rear wheels.

  • General condition:

Essentially a complete object with a good history.

Facts about the model

Mercedes-Benz had limited resources for product development after World War II. After developing the 170 S, which was largely based on pre-war technology, they focused on the large 300 series, including the 300 SL Roadster and the iconic 300 SL Gullwing. At the same time, work was underway on a new mid-range model, which would later become the 180 and 220 models in the 1950s.

The engine for the latter, a small inline-six with an overhead camshaft, was completed long before the rest of the car, and Mercedes decided to take advantage of this by launching an interim model while waiting for the new car. The W187 was quickly created by placing the modern engine into the outdated 170 S model. To accommodate the larger engine, the car was fitted with a new front end featuring integrated headlights. The exclusive two-door models were now sold exclusively with the new engine.

These models continued to be produced for over a year after the sedan was replaced by the new W180 220 in May 1954. During this final year of production, only 85 examples of the coupé were built.

Production totals amounted to 16,154 sedans and 2,360 two-door bodies, including coupés and cabriolets.
