"Built as a rally car from the start and can continue to be driven in the National class or be converted into a historic rally car."

Description

In 1988, Jan Sellholm and co-driver Christer Petterson drove this BMW in the Swedish Rally, finishing 18th overall. Jan Sellholm is well-known in motorsport circles as the founder of Sellholm Tuning. According to the current owner, the car was factory-built as a competition car. It was originally a 325iX – i.e. four-wheel drive – but was later converted to rear-wheel drive only. The decision by the Swedish Motorsport Federation to allow the car to compete in the National class as a rear-wheel drive 325i is documented and included with the car. The vehicle file also contains other documents such as the car’s rally logbook.

The BMW is registered as a rally car under the regulations then in force for road use. Before entering another event, it must undergo an A-inspection. It is also possible to reclassify it under Appendix K. However, for it to qualify as a historic rally car, a few modifications must be made – including replacing the rear lights, removing the rear wing, and deleting the large additional tachometer.

Since it has been a rally car from new, the mileage is low; the odometer currently reads 39,300 km. A set of spare doors and a rear boot lid are included with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts and runs very well in both engine and drivetrain. It has a new alternator. No keys or locks are present; instead, it is operated with a start button. The fuel tank is filled from the luggage compartment, where the starter battery is also located.

  • Interior condition

FIA-approved Sparco seats are fitted, as well as a Luisi sports steering wheel. A full roll cage is installed in the cabin, and the co-driver is equipped with a Rallye Scout 3.

  • Exterior condition

Originally, the BMW was white but today it has a bright orange body color. For a rally car, only a few scratches and minor damages are visible on the body. It does not appear to have been rust-proofed underneath, but given the limited use the car has had, the rust present on the underbody is minimal.

  • General condition

A rally car that has aged well over 28 years – both mechanically and cosmetically! It therefore still has a lot to give, but it will be up to the new owner to decide which rally class to pursue.

Facts about the model

As early as 1976, BMW began work on developing the second generation of the 3 Series. While the first generation, internally coded E21, was only available as a two-door, the new model – known as the E30 – would be offered in several body versions. Compared to its predecessor, the E30 featured a wheelbase extended by seven millimeters and an overall length shortened by three centimeters. This gave excellent proportions for the body design created under the direction of Claus Luthe.

The E30 generation was launched for the 1983 model year. Initially, the lineup included the four-cylinder 316 and the six-cylinder 320i and 323i. In 1985, the 325i was introduced to replace the 323i, and the all-wheel-drive 325iX also made its debut. In 1991, the standard sedan was replaced by the new E36 generation, but the Touring (estate) and convertible versions of the E30 continued in production until 1994. In total, 2.3 million units of the BMW 3 Series E30 generation were built.
