"A coveted Volvo Amazon 123 GT. A car in usable condition from the happy 60s."

Description

This 123 GT began its life in 1966 as a display vehicle at the Rejmes car dealership in Askersund. The Sätterqvist couple was looking to buy a new car and, being loyal to Volvo, they visited their local car dealership. The car was actually too expensive, but it was so sporty and stylish that the couple fell in love with the Amazon. The Sätterqvist family decided to buy the dark green beauty from the showroom and took it home to their farm in Viby. In 1970, the wife took over the Amazon. There are tales in the village about how people would stop and cast envious glances at the wife's GT as she drove by. The car was used year-round during the 70s, mainly for trips to and from the store. The wife continued to drive the car for almost her entire life. During the 80s, it was used less frequently and the last inspection took place in 1985 when the son inherited the car from his mother. By then, the odometer showed just over 160,000 kilometers. The son worked his entire professional life as an engineer in engine design for Volvo in Skövde. He had a passionate interest in cars, especially Volvos. He had a small collection of cars ranging from this Amazon, P1800 and 142, to a 240 turbo and 945 Classic. The man stored all his cars in a heated garage. He took care of them, drove short distances on the gravel road at home, and kept them running. Until 2020, the car was driven annually for a few short trips. After 2020, the cars were more stationary. The car then changed hands to the current owner who was asked if he wanted to buy two of the cars from the family. He has since serviced and started the car, and had it inspected, without any remarks. It is said that the Amazon has never been welded or renovated other than a repaint done in the late 70s when the car received new fiberglass front fenders and a front panel. In the 80s, a stainless steel exhaust system was installed on the Amazon. In the 90s, new original front fenders and a front plate were purchased from Volvo but were left unused. These come with the Amazon. New brakes were installed on the car in 2010. The Amazon has also had NOS bumper horns mounted on the front, and NOS bumper horns for the rear bumper come with the car separately, new fluids, new ignition cables, and a general inspection were done in 2023.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs well without any issues. The engine starts easily and the gearbox functions as it should. The car's brakes are soft and consistent. The period-correct radio, tachometer, and external temperature gauge all work. The support bearing for the drive shaft has been replaced.

  • Interior condition:

Original and untouched interior. Signs of wear can be seen on the driver's seat, but otherwise, the seats are in very good condition. The door panels, headliner, GT steering wheel, and floor mats are also in good condition. The instrument panel is also intact and in good shape.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has an older repaint that was done in the 70s. The fiberglass front and front fenders are in place, but NOS (new old stock) front panel and front fenders are included with the car, as well as NOS bumper horns for the rear. According to statements, and from what we observed during the photo session, the car appears to be unwelded. There's rust/surface rust in various places, but considering the age of the car and the fact that it seems mostly untouched, this is to be expected, see pictures. The hubcaps that belong to this model are available and included separately.

  • General condition:

A very good project to develop or just keep it as it is.

Facts about the model

When Volvo introduced the Amazon 123 GT in 1967, it was intended for those who couldn't afford a 1800S – or perhaps needed a more practical yet sporty car. The new GT was based on the two-door Amazon. The transmission was the same four-speed with Overdrive.

The 123 GT was equipped with features such as dual side mirrors on the fenders, Hella fog and high beam lights, hubcaps, a tachometer on the dashboard, and a three-spoked sports steering wheel, radial tires, loud horns, chrome folding fittings, and lighting in the engine and trunk compartments.

Without a doubt, the 123 GT was the most expensive Amazon. In 1967, when the cheapest Favorit model with a three-speed gearbox cost 15,300 kronor, the 123 GT was priced at a whole 18,800 kronor.

In 1967, the Volvo Amazon was the best-selling car model in Sweden, but during the second half of the year, the new 142 and 144 overtook it.

In 1968, the Amazon 123 GT disappeared from the Swedish market, and the station wagon followed the next year. In the summer of 1970, the last Amazon was manufactured.
