"A complete and nice car that needs a technical review of brakes and an engine overhaul/engine replacement after a long period of inactivity."

Description

It was purchased in 2015 in northern California by a Swedish VW collector. The bus had only had two owners and had been driven in southern Oregon since new. It was manufactured in October 1975 and was taken off the road in December 1987 according to the documents. When the bus was sold in the USA in 2015, it was reported to have been parked due to engine noise. The plan has been to renovate the engine here in Sweden and have the bus inspected for registration, but it has been standing still for eight years. It has been built as a camper van since new. The white paint, Pastellweiss VW L90D, is original, and according to information, the beautiful painted decor has also been on it since new. The model, known as a panel van, is particularly enjoyable as a camper van since the sides are covered. This version is rarer today and has a higher collector's value for many compared to a regular bus with windows. The car is equipped with AC and cruise control with uncertain functionality. It has covered 34,000 American miles during the 12 years it was used. This corresponds to around 6,000 Swedish miles. Considering the worn details on the car and its use as a leisure vehicle, the mileage may be accurate, but it could also be 134,000 miles, which would then be equivalent to 20,000 Swedish miles, although this seems less likely over 12 active years.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car rolls easily but doesn't start. It needs a general technical inspection and engine repair. The easiest solution is to install a 1600 engine from a regular 1302/1303 Beetle. Such an engine fits directly onto the bus's gearbox.. A battery is missing. This bus is sold as-is, to bee repaired by the buyer, or for restoration.

  • Interior condition

Unaltered original interior, but front seats have been reupholstered. Includes a corresponding awning/tent, but its condition hasn't been checked. Two larger stone chips on the windshield. Heater and water tank have been removed. Folding rear seat.

  • Exterior condition

Weathered original paint with painted decor that has been on the car since it was new. Hippie vibes from the seventies in the decor. Stone chips on the windshield. The car has received new wheels and tires in Sweden. Surface rust from stone chips and worn paint. No rust on structural components. Dent on the sliding door and on the rear right corner (pictures). Otherwise, it's a good candidate for a restoration to like-new condition with only surface rust, and it has never been welded before.

  • General condition

Untouched since its heyday in the seventies with associated hippie interpretations and camper life. In terms of bodywork, it's in good condition, making it enjoyable to use as a basis for a more rugged restoration or as a meticulous restoration to its original state.

Facts about the model

The T2 bus was introduced in 1968 and was manufactured until 1980. The T2 was a facelift and modernization of the original bus (T1) and became a bestseller worldwide. The most significant change was the elongation of the front, with improved suspension, steering, seats, and a curved windshield (hence the model being called Bay-Window or simply Bay in the USA). This made the driver's cabin significantly more comfortable. The car also received larger windows, but because this is a panel van model with metal sides on the cargo area, this is not visible. In the early 1970s, the model got larger bumpers, front turn signals were moved up, and the taillights became larger. This version is known as the Late-Bay and is characterized by flatter hubcaps and wheels with round holes all around.
