"A stable and pleasant compromise between open and closed on an otherwise straight-six, fun-to-drive Munich classic."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in April 1986 by Förenade Bil Stockholm. The car likely remained in the Stockholm area until the mid-nineties. Eventually it made its way to Skåne and finally to the current owner, a leading figure in the BMW 02 club. He has owned the car for just over 15 years. At a service in 2007 it had covered 163,400 km, at which point the timing belt was also replaced. Today the car has covered 182,700 km. In just under 10 years, usage has thus not been particularly intensive. The current owner has had a well-known BMW mechanic in Kågeröd service the car every other year regardless of mileage. In addition to the service book, there is a thick binder with additional documentation and service receipts. The most recent passed inspection was carried out on 2026-07-31.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

A wonderful straight-six sound with the engine, gearbox, and clutch all functioning nicely. The cylinder head was rebuilt in 2011. At that time the timing belt was replaced once again, and then replaced one more time a few years ago. During his period of stewardship, the owner has also replaced the brakes and shock absorbers.

  • Interior condition

Nice feel to the interior; the driver's seat shows some wear with tears mainly on the backrest and a few on the seat cushion. Otherwise good door panels, headliner, and carpets. Newer Blaupunkt Bremen DAB 80's vintage look with features including Bluetooth, USB, and SD card input.

  • Exterior condition

Likely partially repainted on the right rear fender and possibly also the right door. The owner has also had non-original black body coat sanded off and repainted under both bumpers. The soft top, together with the sunroof fabric, was replaced by the owner with a new one of fine quality a couple of years ago.

  • General condition

Well-preserved and well-maintained by a discerning enthusiast for the past 15 years. A cabrio-coach E30 is not the most common version of the model and holds a special appeal among some of the connoisseurs on the BMW scene.

Facts about the model

BMW 320i Baur Cabriolet is a relatively rare part of the classic E30 generation. In the early 1980s, BMW had not yet developed its own series-produced, full convertible for the second generation of the 3 Series. To meet the demand for open-top cars, BMW instead turned to the renowned coachbuilder Baur in Stuttgart, which had been modifying the marque's models ever since the 1930s.
The collaboration resulted in a Top Cabriolet (TC), an innovative cabrio coach design that Baur patented. Instead of a fully open roof, the car retained its fixed door frames and received a sturdy, integrated targa bar. This created a two-part roof solution where the front section consisted of a removable hard plastic targa panel, while the rear section was made up of a folding fabric soft top with a plastic window. The design offered a safer construction with greater torsional rigidity than traditional convertibles, which was a major selling point at a time when stricter American crash safety requirements threatened fully open cars. The 320i version had the six-cylinder two-liter M20 engine, fuel injection, and 129 hp. Rear-wheel-drive driving pleasure with a free-revving machine. The 1985 model year marked a shift for the Baur model. In the summer of 1985, BMW unveiled its own fully open 325i Convertible at the Frankfurt auto show, which entered series production the following spring. This meant that demand for Baur's targa solution gradually declined, which makes cars from 1985 in particular a bit more exciting from a collector car perspective.
