Volvo 780 Bertone Coupé V6 — 1988

The brand’s second Bertone coupé was a suitably “Volvo-moderate” version built on the 700-series platform. Here is a well-preserved example with low mileage of 134,930 km, presenting a restrained exterior but a far more two-tone elegance inside. It also comes with an initial history as a company car in its home country.

"Entertaining history, good overall condition, and low mileage—topped off with a great driving feel."

Description

It was first registered for road use in November 1987 and initially had a history with Volvo Tjänstebilar AB. The first year and the first two services were handled internally at Volvo PV. After that, the book is blank until Volvo dealer Visby Motorcentral took over all servicing up to 80,000 km. To take out a Volvo 780 Bertone Coupé as a company car at Volvo PV likely meant an employee in a higher position—probably also an interested and conscious enthusiast. At least that’s what we like to think; it makes the story a little better.

From 2001 to 2011, the car seems to have been off the road and unused. The owner at that time was reportedly an art gallery owner who simply enjoyed the fine shape of the car without driving it. A police cadet with a particular fondness for Volvo coupés spotted the stationary 780 during a garage inspection, convinced the gallery owner, brought the car back to life, and eventually the current owner took it over.

The majority of today’s total mileage of just under 135,000 km was therefore likely accumulated early in the car’s active years. Since 2011, it has covered less than 9,000 km. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2024-07-15.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Engine and gearbox feel familiar and work well together with normal brakes, while the chassis carries a kind of composed, solid weight in its movement—no play or looseness detected.

  • Interior condition:

Two-tone leather interior in an inviting, pleasant condition. Door panels and headliner are in good shape, and both the power windows and sunroof work well, although the sunroof’s inner trim has partially corroded (see picture). The folding mechanism on the driver’s seat for entry to the rear is not functioning—likely an issue with the control on the side of the backrest. The A/C blows cold and strong, and the stereo works nicely with its cool equalizer, but the power antenna does not extend—so either enjoy listening to old cassette tapes in style or repair the antenna’s electrical function.

  • Exterior condition:

Smart and tidy exterior with good paintwork. A few small blemishes on the bumpers. Nice original wheels with only a minor scuff on the front left, and older tires (10 years) that still have good tread and low mileage. The lower rear window trim pieces have the characteristic minor damage typical for this model—new replacements are included.

  • General condition:

A fine and understated representative of the model—choosing a white color was probably not very common. Perhaps that was also why it became a company car. Either way, it is a pleasant and well-preserved example with relatively low mileage.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 780 was produced between 1985 and 1990 and was Volvo’s most expensive car at the time, costing twice as much as a regular 740. The Volvo 780 is a coupé version of the Volvo 760/740, designed by the Italian firm Bertone and built in limited numbers, primarily for the American market. While it resembled its 700-series siblings, the Volvo 740 and 760, it featured an entirely new body. A total of 8,518 Volvo 780s were produced between 1985 and 1990, assembled in Italy by Bertone.
