Renault 20 TS — 1978

A sensible and enjoyable project, especially for someone with sheet metal and paint skills—or good contacts in the trade. After that, the fun part remains for those who enjoy assembling with new and clean parts.

"Not so common to see this model with an automatic transmission."

Description

Sold new in Sweden and mainly used in the south of the country during its early years. In 1989, a Renault dealer/collector bought the car, and it remained in his collection until the next owner purchased it in 2020. That owner, a Renault technician, took on the task of getting the car running again. A thorough inspection was carried out, and any worn parts were replaced.

During his ownership, the car was mostly driven locally and to several events. The current owner bought it in 2022 and has used it sparingly since. Today, it attracts a lot of attention, as it is quite rare to see on the roads. The odometer reading seems reasonable in relation to the car’s overall condition.

Two sets of keys are included. No service book.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Extensive work has been carried out on the car by the previous owner. Among other things, the brakes were refurbished, a new camshaft was installed along with new drive belts, the radiator was restored, and the entire electrical system was overhauled. The car starts easily and sounds good. Both the brakes and the automatic transmission function as they should.

Equipped with sturdy steel wheels and tires with good tread depth. The electric sunroof can only be operated manually. Fuel gauge—function uncertain. The interior handle for the left rear door is loose.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in functional, usable condition. The headliner, door panels, and floor mats are also in used condition.

  • Exterior condition:

The body looks decent for a Renault from 1978, but there is some rust around the fuel filler flap and rear side window, as well as along the lower edges of the doors, the exhaust, and the trunk lid—plus in several other spots (see pictures). The car has been repainted earlier in its life, and the paint shows signs of use and age (see pictures). The underside looks about as expected for a 47-year-old car (see pictures).

  • General condition:

A Renault 20 TS with automatic transmission in usable condition. Inspected and approved at the vehicle inspection. Ready to drive.

Facts about the model

The Renault 20 began production in the autumn of 1975 and was launched as a 1976 model. It was essentially a mix of components from the Renault 12, 16, and 30. The body and chassis were largely identical to the Renault 30 apart from a few details—the most obvious being that the R20 had rectangular headlights, while the R30 had twin round ones.

The R20 was launched with the older but proven engine from the Renault 16 TX, producing 90 hp, which many considered underpowered. Later (from late July 1977 production) came the R20 TS/LS as 1978 models, fitted with the modern two-liter engine developed in the late 1970s together with Peugeot and Citroën.

In Sweden, the versions R20 L, TL, GTL, LS, and TS were sold. The R20 was essentially intended to replace the Renault 16, although both models were sold in parallel for several years. The R20 and R30 were the only Renault models to feature front-wheel drive with a longitudinally mounted engine ahead of the gearbox.

A four-wheel-drive R20 with a turbo engine famously won the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1982.
