Description

It’s rare to come across such a fantastically well-preserved original car. The car has only 73,000 km on the odometer. It is nearly as pristine as when it left the Saab dealer, Motor & Handels in Katrineholm. The seating surfaces are in excellent condition, as are the door panels, carpets, headliner, and dashboard. The car is smoke- and pet-free. The brake discs, brake drums, exhaust system, and lights are all original. The lighting is provided by period-correct globe bulbs. The car has always been serviced at a certified dealership, and a thick binder with receipts, inspection reports, and the purchase contract is included (see video). Naturally, the car has never been driven in winter.

  • Interior condition:

Like new. There is nothing to criticize. Protective seat covers have always been used in the car, so the seats are as good as new.

  • Exterior condition:

A completely rust-free car with no visible damage. The rust-free undercarriage has been treated with rust protection. The chrome, lights, trim, and windows are all in excellent condition.

  • General condition:

Place this car in a museum or private collection and let future generations be impressed by Swedish engineering from Saab’s golden era.

Owner's comment

The first owner bought the car in 1970 here in Katrineholm. He owned it until 2013 and drove it very sparingly. The car was always kept in a dark, well-ventilated, and dry garage and was never driven during the winter months. In 2013, I took over the car as the second owner. Over the past 20 years, the car has only covered about 10,000 kilometers. There is a very well-documented history regarding this car. A car in this exquisite condition should be considered an investment by anyone, and it would be wonderful if it ended up in the right hands so that its condition can be preserved. A true Saab enthusiast or car collector should invest in this car, or perhaps even a car museum. As the current owner, I look forward to ensuring the car’s future is secured in a responsible way, and I hope the next owner will maintain its fine original condition.

Facts about the model

Compared to its predecessor, the Saab 96 had a larger and more powerful engine, a new rear end with a larger rear window, a new dashboard, more spacious luggage space, and a roomier back seat, making the car a five-seater. In 1965, it underwent a “facelift” where the car received a more modern front end. The front was also extended to make room for a larger engine.

A 1.2-liter inline four-cylinder engine was in development, but Saab instead had the opportunity to use the V4 engine from Ford, which was also found in the Taunus 15M. The V4 came in the 1967 model and allowed continued sales after a crisis due to the outdated two-stroke engine. However, the two-stroke engine remained an option until 1968, when it was fully replaced by the V4 engine. A legacy of the two-stroke engine was that all 96s had freewheel (overrun clutch). This feature had been introduced to protect the two-stroke engines from damage due to engine braking. If the engine continues to rotate without fuel supply, it does not get enough lubrication, as the oil is mixed into the fuel. With the V4 engine, the reason for using freewheel was no longer necessary, but many drivers appreciated the ability to shift without pressing the clutch pedal.

In addition to the standard model, a more luxurious and sportier version was also produced, mainly intended for export: the Granturismo 750 (1960-61), Sport (1962-1965), and Monte Carlo 850 (1964-1968).
