"The car was recently inherited by the current owner's son from his uncle, who shared ownership with his father, who originally purchased the car in 1976. It has been garaged intermittently for approximately 20 years. While it does run and drive, it doesn’t perform smoothly and requires some mechanical attention. The ignition coil, alternator, and fuel pump need to be reviewed and repaired, and the Weber 45 carburetors require renovation. General servicing is also needed. The car was last inspected on 2012-08-31, and it will need one final inspection to become exempt."

Description

The car was originally sold by Ford dealer Auto Centrum in Ulricehamn and has recently been inherited by the son from his uncle. His father, who originally purchased it in 1976, used the car as his daily driver throughout the 1970s and '80s. Both the father and uncle had a deep love for the car, which was renovated and repainted, likely in the 1980s or '90s. Since then, it seems to have been garaged intermittently over the past 20 years, though the son isn't sure of the exact work done during that time. Unfortunately, both his father and uncle have passed away, leaving the car in his care. It still runs and drives, but it backfires and will need a review of the electrical system, along with renovations to the fuel pump and carburetors. Mileage is at least 134,000 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs and drives but will require a thorough review as mentioned, including a final inspection to secure permanent exemption. It sits on good wheels, though the tires are older and may need replacing. Please note, transport will be necessary to collect the car.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is in good, clean, and complete condition. The seats are in nice shape, with only a small split seam on the driver's seat (see pictures). The door cards, carpet, and headliner are all in good condition. The dashboard is undamaged and features the original gauges, along with a few extra switches.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is presentable, showing some older signs of repair around the rear lower wings and wheel arches. It appears that the front driver's wing may have been replaced, as it sticks out slightly at the lower edge near the door. The boot lid requires adjustment, but rust issues are minimal. The underbody looks solid, with evidence of some older welding, including repairs to the inner arches in the boot. The car has been repainted and looks fine from a distance, though a closer inspection reveals a few defects and minor paint runs in some areas.

  • General condition:

This is a very cool car that could be easily ready for proper driving with the mentioned fixes. The cosmetic issues can be addressed over time, as none are urgently needed.

Facts about the model

Introduced in March 1967, the Ford Lotus Cortina MkII (officially named the Ford Lotus Cortina Twin Cam) retained much of the high-performance DNA of its illustrious MkI predecessor. Unlike its predecessor, the MkII was available in a range of colors and featured a distinctive black front grille, 5.5J x 13 wheels, and Lotus badging on each rear wing.

It was equipped with a more powerful version of the 1558cc Lotus 'Twin-Cam' engine, producing 109 bhp, which had previously been optional on the Elan and MkI. The MkII also benefited from a revised 3.77:1 final drive ratio and a new remote-control gearchange. To aid weight distribution, the battery remained in the boot, while the two-door sports saloon boasted a wider track and a larger fuel tank.

Riding on stiffened suspension and utilizing disc/drum brakes, the Ford Cortina Lotus MkII provided a solid performance platform. It remained in production until 1970, with approximately 4,032 units believed to have rolled out of the Dagenham factory.
