Willys Jeep CJ-7 4,2 — 1978

A Swedish-sold off-road classic in excellent and user-friendly condition, with one foot still rooted in the original design for the WW2 military requirements of the USA and the other foot in the more modern seventies and eighties, featuring a clearer civilian market-oriented profile.

"The true functional opposite of the eighties epithet 'disco jeep,' even though an open Willys Jeep CJ7 probably also endured such derogatory nicknames at times. But the heritage from the first small, utilitarian, and invaluable military vehicle is evident."

"The true functional opposite of the eighties epithet 'disco jeep,' even though an open Willys Jeep CJ7 probably also endured such derogatory nicknames at times. But the heritage from the first small, utilitarian, and invaluable military vehicle is evident."

Description

It was sold new by an authorized dealer in March 1979, likely in southern Sweden, and the stylish two-row license plate tells its own story, emphasizing an attractive sales and import history in a pleasant way. According to information, one of the previous owners stationed the car as a utility vehicle on an island in the Blekinge archipelago, but it has enjoyed enthusiast status since at least 1988. The current owner purchased the car in 2019 and was well acquainted with it, as he grew up in the village outside Ystad where the car resided from 1988 to 2019. With the support of the history, it is highly likely that this CJ-7 has only covered just over 84 000 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

An older, uncomplicated, and robust driveline construction with the straight-six engine and a three-speed gearbox. With low gear engaged, it moves confidently through terrain. The current owner has tidied up the engine compartment and painted the engine with the original turquoise engine color. Outside, it hums with a characteristic and pleasant six-cylinder sound.

  • Interior condition:

A typical, clear, robust, and stylish sheet metal instrument panel, painted in the car's color. Folding and assembling the soft top requires some effort, but it becomes relatively quick with practice. Without doors and with a folded front windshield, the open feeling can't get any more open than this. The car is registered as a truck and therefore not approved for rear passengers, but the current owner has still installed a comfortable small rear seat with proper four-point seat belts for a safer potential ride. In the front, there are leather seats from a Saab 9000 or 900; a previous owner installed these. The driver's seat has some wear in the form of a loose seam on the seat cushion but is otherwise in good condition. The original front seats are still available and come with the car but require new upholstery.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been repainted in stages by a previous and current owner when sills, a fender, and the window frame were replaced. According to the current owner, the wheels and tires have just the right beefy look. He also mentioned that when he bought the car, even larger tires were fitted. The classic Jeep model has many interpretations, as it should. There are also numerous possibilities for various exterior configurations with a soft top/removable cloth doors and a winter enclosure with a hardtop and sturdy metal doors.

  • General condition:

Well-known on-and-off-road charm and a unique utility and leisure vehicle, especially if you live in the countryside and attach a snowplow in winter. Otherwise, it's a pleasant original configuration and a fine representative of the brand, exuding a healthy dose of Jeep romanticism.
