Description

In the early eighties, this Saab 95 was brought home and was essentially a rust heap. The purchase price was 200 kronor. Hopeless, one might think, but for an aviation engineer who repaired Viggen planes at Såtenäs on a daily basis, it was a fun challenge. The keyword for the project was sustainability. This car would never rust again. Therefore, all damaged sheet metal - which was almost everything except the roof - was replaced with stainless steel. Floor, sills, door skins, the trunk, and more. New front fenders and hood were molded in fiberglass. Inside, entirely new door panels and instrument panels were created from scratch. The V4 engine was worn out and was replaced with a better one from a Volkswagen Passat. To solve this, the radiator had to move to the side and be housed in an aluminum enclosure. All remaining regular sheet metal was carefully treated with rust protection (Tectyl) before painting. Brackets and reinforcements in the engine bay were also made from stainless steel.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It's a bit surprising to find a straight VW four-cylinder under the hood of a Saab, but it works really well. It starts easily and feels to be in very good condition. The engine comes from an Audi 80 and delivers 75 horsepower.

In the center console, you'll find the car's electrical control unit with all the relays and fuses. There's also a control for adjusting the fuel mixture. Otherwise, most of the mechanical components are intact and fully functional. Another modification that has been made is that the pistons in the brake calipers have been turned in stainless steel.

  • Interior condition:

Here, you won't recognize much from the original Saab 95. Everything has been custom-made, from the instrumentation to the seats. There are many clever solutions and stylish instrumentation of unknown origin. The overall condition is very good.

  • Exterior condition:

When the car was completed in 1984, it was initially painted blue, and a few years later, it changed color to cream white. Durability was the guiding principle in this project, so the paint was mixed with a special hardener. Considering that this car was used year-round for 30 years, often on gravel roads, one could conclude that this paint recipe might make auto painters unemployed. There's hardly anything noteworthy to mention about the exterior. One modification that has been made is the edge around the taillights. The frame is gone and has been replaced by custom-made stainless steel trim pieces. Likewise, the rear bumper is of custom design, also in stainless steel.

  • General condition:

The condition is still good, considering that this car was used as a daily driver for 30 years after it was built.
