Chevrolet Lastvagn — 1929

In the car's early years, American cars were built in Sweden using ready-made frames, engines, and suspensions. Bodies, flatbeds, and extensions resulted in "Chevrolet trucks made in Sweden by Swedish workers". Here is an exciting project and object with a fire truck history and later renovation ambitions. Older registration copies and plates are available for future origin verification and registration inspection.

Description

A truck chassis from Chevrolet was built into a firetruck, which eventually served with the Äspered Volunteer Fire Brigade, a small town northeast of Borås. It was actively in service with the fire brigade until...

The vehicle was removed from the old register on September 1, 1963, and eventually ended up in Östersund through a friend of the current owner's father. This friend, sometime in the late sixties or early seventies, saw the truck parked on a farm in Skåne. He bought and transported it to Östersund, initiating a restoration project. Progress was slow, and when the friend moved to the west coast in 2014, the current owner's father bought the truck in 2015 as a joint father/son project. They continued together, but since the father's passing in 2018, progress has stalled. The owner hopes to find someone to carry on with the project. The vehicle has been stored in a warm and dry place ever since its discovery in Skåne. Advertisements in the Lantmannabladet of that era boasted of a "six-cylinder engine with four forward gears", also highlighting that the truck "was built by skilled Swedish craftsmen". Indeed, vehicles back then weren't exactly speed demons, and with the torque and power from a bigger engine, life was made easier for the users, who undoubtedly also appreciated bodies with Swedish craftsmanship.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The original engine has been test started in the wooden rig shown in the photos, using a Volvo radiator. A completely refurbished spare original engine from 1931 is also included. The wheel suspension, rear axle, driveshaft, springs, rims, and frame have been painted black by the current owner.

  • Interior condition:

A wooden frame for the seat has been constructed and integrated into the cabin. The metal instrument panel has been surface-treated, with openings for the instrument cluster, which in turn has not been refurbished but is complete.

  • Exterior condition:

The wooden frame for the body, cabin, and flatbed was replaced and built already 50 years ago when the first restoration effort began. The cabin, hood, and fenders are only loosely attached for the photos to provide a reasonably clear view of what the vehicle looks like. The fenders have been sandblasted and painted, and the hood has been sandblasted.

  • General condition:

A fun and largely complete project in a good foundational condition for further restoration.
