BMW 502 Super V8 3.2 — 1959

A vintage BMW from the early years with few owners in a limited geographical area, beautifully restored and with a likely relatively low mileage of just over 140,000 kilometers. Good history, many useful spare parts, and a wealth of detailed documentation.

"A dignified Baroque Angel in a presentable condition with an owner who knows how to properly care for enthusiast cars."

Description

It was delivered new in August 1963 to the mink breeder Göran Karlsson in Finnerödja, outside Laxå. These models from BMW were expensive and hard to sell, so we can assume that this was a car that had been in stock for a couple of years, and also that mink breeder Karlsson got to purchase his 1959 model Baroque Angel at a good price. He kept it until 1987 and drove it relatively little. The subsequent owners also drove it sparingly, and the car hasn't left Västergötland since; Mariestad, Lundsbrunn, and then to the current owner in Götene. He is a passionate BMW enthusiast, both on four and two wheels, with a particular soft spot for the brand's technical solutions and qualities. The car was drivable and had been stored in a heated garage since 2004, but it wasn't inspected when he purchased it almost three years ago. The bodywork renovation, the technical review, and the interior cleaning were completed in 2022 when the car was also inspected for the last time.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The machine hums steadily at a working temperature of 100 degrees with a noticeable V8 rumble from a custom-made stainless system that a previous owner had installed. A new exhaust system to the original specification is stored in the garage and is included. The engine, with its two renovated two-port downdraft carburetors, needs just the right working temperature to run smoothly, and the four idle jets must be correctly adjusted to share the fuel. It's a tuning matter to keep an eye on. An electronic ignition system and an electric fuel pump (the standard mechanical one remains with only a pass-through function, and the diaphragm is bypassed) ensure a good spark and the correct fuel pressure. The four-speed gearbox with steering column shifting is relatively easy to handle.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a nice and fresh original condition, with only a small wear tear on the driver's seat cushion. The owner has placed classic car rugs on the front seats to protect the upholstery from further wear. The headliner is clean and tidy, and the instrument panel's wood veneer is without cracks or crazing. A beautiful original Blaupunkt AM-radio with speakers, but they are non-functional. Also, note the easily removable and cleanable air filters next to the radiator for fresh air into the cabin.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork renovated with new two-tone paint, which, according to information, was available as an option, at least in the German market. New tires with an elegant thin white stripe and beautiful rims with original hubcaps. The rearview mirrors originally sat on the front fenders but were replaced at some point with the well-known blue-tinted door mirrors from Volvo's late sixties and early seventies. The older license plates seen in the pictures before the renovation are still available and are included.

  • General condition:

A pleasant and well-restored representative of the model with a distinctly upscale appearance. Nice and intriguing documentation along with a substantial spare parts package.

Facts about the model

The model earned the nickname "Baroque Angel" from its plump and curvy body design and its extensive chrome detailing. It was an expensive car, and it was slow to sell in the Swedish market. Hence, this particular model from 1959 was first put into use in 1963.
