"Whether we choose to call this wagon a Sleeper, mild Backdate, or mild Custom, it's a charming and pleasant wagon where much of the mechanics have been overhauled and updated recently. This is how many Amazons looked in the 70s/80s/90s. So, nostalgia in many ways."

Description

This car was registered for traffic on January 1, 1965, which was common around the turn of the year at that time. Its early history is currently unknown, and the mileage is also unspecified. About ten years ago, it underwent a cosmetic restoration, receiving new paintwork in a "Backdate" style with a two-tone finish and a mild custom look.

The current owner, a rally and vehicle enthusiast, acquired it in May 2020 and has focused extensively on mechanical improvements.

Over the past few years, the engine has been replaced with a B18 Sport (reportedly from a PV 65) featuring a new C-camshaft and dual SU carburetors. Other updates include a new fuel pump, a 2.5-inch exhaust system, a new clutch with a new slave cylinder, and a refurbished clutch master cylinder. Additionally, a new gearbox was installed, along with new seals.

The front and rear suspensions have been rebuilt with new "blue bushings," new shock absorbers, and springs. The braking system has been thoroughly overhauled, with new front discs, calipers, and pads, as well as new rear wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and bands. New braided brake lines (racing type) have been installed all around, along with new handbrake cables and a new fuel tank sender unit.

Service and tuning include new oil in the engine, gearbox, and rear axle. The valves have been recently adjusted, and a front-end alignment has been performed. A brand-new windshield was installed just recently.

The car is equipped with a tow bar and comes with various used spare parts and a workshop manual. It is inspected, road-ready, and in good condition for immediate use.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs quickly and smoothly in engine and drivetrain. Might need some break-in and carburetor adjustment. During test drive at a normal pace on smaller roads, handling, steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes were in fine working condition. Engine and exhaust sounds in the sporty tone that was requested. The car has not been checked on a lift during inspection, but what could be seen looked good. Photos recently taken by the owner on a lift are available as a supplement in the photo series.

  • Interior condition:

Interior likely in original design with good chairs and rear seat with mild wear and tear. Front door panels have been replaced with new ones in the correct style. Nice headliner and newer needle felt carpets. Steering wheel, controls, and buttons in good condition. All electrical functions appear to work well. Dashboard is good but with discreet cracks. Instrument cluster has been painted and is flaking. Fine functioning tachometer. Philips radio from the era that works. Front seat belts are retractable. Rubber seals in mixed condition, new ones in rear doors.

  • Exterior condition:

Glossy and well-maintained paintwork with some visible imperfections from the respray. Chrome, trim, and other details are in good condition for their age, showing some signs of use. Lighting components are in good shape. The windshield is new, and the rest of the glass is in good condition.

Nicely painted wheels are complemented by stylish trim rings and hubcaps. The car is equipped with good retro-style tires with white sidewalls (date code: 0617). Black grille halves are currently installed, but used stainless steel ones are included.

The engine and trunk compartments are in good condition, with minor surface rust noted in the spare wheel well

  • General condition:

The current owners have focused on the mechanics, and there are choices to be made and details to review. Overall, however, it is a fun and lively vehicle with classic and enthusiast status, featuring a retro feel from the era of Swedish welfare state.

Facts about the model

Countless articles have been written about the Amazon, one of Sweden's most cherished classic cars.

Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with a touch of Italian influence, the Amazon was Volvo's response to the so-called pontoon body style that became a hallmark of the 1950s. Manufactured from 1956 to 1970, the Amazon covered model years 1957 to 1970. In 1959, it became the world's first mass-produced car to feature three-point seat belts in the front as standard equipment.

The bulletproof B18 engine, producing 75 hp, was introduced for the 1962 model year. By 1965, several updates were made, including a new grille, updated emblems, redesigned seats and interior, perforated steel wheels, and new hubcaps.

When the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and a production run of 667,332 units. It was available in two-door, four-door, and five-door versions, ranging from standard models to Sport and GT variants.

A Swedish icon and a piece of motoring history.
