"Mercedes quality and comfort in every aspect. Fully ticked off on the equipment list and then some. Most things work as intended, making the journey relaxing and pleasant. In fine and well-preserved condition for its age and mileage. There are some details that need addressing, and a detailing will enhance the vehicle even further."

Description

This car was first registered for traffic in Switzerland on October 26, 1998, and was acquired by a Swede living in Lucerne on May 5, 1999. The following year, in October, it was brought to Sweden as inherited property via his son. A new owner took possession in March 2007. Two years later, the car was registered to a Mercedes dealership, where the current owner, a Mercedes enthusiast, purchased it shortly thereafter. Over the past 14 years, he has driven approximately 5000 km per year.

The car has always been garage-kept and serviced at a Mercedes workshop. Before the annual inspection in April, it has consistently been sent in for a thorough check and oil changes. All inspections have been passed without any remarks. A binder containing inspection reports, documentation, and receipts is included.

In addition to regular maintenance, significant work has been performed in recent years:

Air suspension overhaul (2018)
New alternator (2019)
New brake pads and discs all around, plus a new battery (2021)
Complete AC system refurbishment with a new condenser, water pump, and all related components (2022)
The car comes with Goodyear summer tires (4mm tread) on seven-spoke aluminum wheels, roof bars, and custom-fitted protective mats—all original Mercedes accessories. The package also includes the build sheet, original documentation, owner’s manual, and two keys.

Additionally, the car is equipped with an engine heater and an outlet for a cabin heater with a timer.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and nicely in engine and drivetrain. Test driven at a calm pace on small roads, a 70 km/h stretch, and on the highway. Everything such as steering, road holding, automatic transmission, brakes, etc. worked well and the ride was comfortable. The power was there during kickdown. Not checked on a lift, but it looked good from what could be seen, no comments on the undercarriage, etc. from the vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in excellent and well-maintained condition, featuring soft and supple leather with good support in the seats and rear bench. The door panels and trim are in great shape, as are the wooden accents. The headliner and carpets are also in fine condition.

The steering wheel, controls, buttons, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition, with all electrical functions operating properly. The climate control system cools effectively. However, some buttons are slightly soft to the touch, and the functionality of the sunroof is uncertain. The tilt function works, but the sliding mechanism is stiff.

The driver’s side mirror is "stuck in dimmed mode." The original telephone is included and rests in its designated spot between the seats, although its functionality is uncertain.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork (Emerald Schwarz 189) features a subtle gray-green tone and is in shiny, well-preserved condition for its age and mileage, with some minor wear and a small blemish on the front bumper. The lower sections of the doors have been repainted, and there are slight signs of bubbling at the rear wheel arches.

Glass, plastic, and lighting components are in excellent condition. The wheels are in good shape with minor scuffs. Tires are in great condition, with studless Continental winter tires (7.5 mm tread). Both the engine bay and trunk are clean and well-maintained.

  • General condition:

A premium Top-of-the-Line vehicle that has "suddenly" reached 25 years of age. This example is in well-preserved, serviced, and documented condition, with few owners and relatively low mileage, making this highway cruiser a solid classic and a true enthusiast's car.

Owner's comment

A nice and pleasant car that I have driven and cared for with pleasure for almost 15 years. A new Mercedes Coupe has now been ordered, which is why the next owner will take over and take care of this one.

Facts about the model

Since the 1950s, Mercedes has been synonymous with luxury, chrome, and performance, particularly in models bearing the "S" designation. However, the first model officially called the "S-Class" was the W116, introduced in 1972. The Mercedes-Benz W220 became the fourth generation of the S-Class, replacing the W140 after the 1998 model year.

The W220 offered a range of engine options, including diesel, gas, and gasoline engines in V6, V8, or V12 configurations. Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had slightly smaller external dimensions but provided greater interior space, particularly in the long-wheelbase versions, albeit with slightly reduced trunk capacity.

Production of the W220 began on August 13, 1998, followed by the C215 coupé in 1999. A total of 484,683 units of the W220 series were produced, slightly surpassing the production figures of the W140. Production ended in late 2005, when the W220 was replaced by the W221 S-Class, and the C215 was succeeded by the C216 CL-Class in 2006.

The W220 offered more engine options than the W126 or W140. The lineup started with a smaller 2.8L V6 producing 197 hp (147 kW). A popular choice was the 3.2L V6 with 224 hp (167 kW), followed by a 3.7L V6 delivering 245 hp (183 kW). The S500 featured a 5.0L V8 with 302 hp (225 kW).

The W220 was the first S-Class generation where an automatic transmission was standard across all models. Initially, all vehicles were equipped with the 5-speed 5G-Tronic transmission, but after 2003 (2004 in the U.S.), the S430 and S500 were offered with the new 7-speed 7G-Tronic transmission.
