Description
In the final stages of World War II, a 16-year-old boy was working as an apprentice at the Focke-Wulf aircraft factory. In January 1945 he was ordered into the war on the Eastern Front. There he was eventually captured by the Allies and subsequently taken from a prison camp to the area around Albertville in France, where he was to spend the rest of his captivity as a farmhand on a farm. The family who owned the farm were kind and good people and took good care of the emaciated and traumatized boy. His duties included accompanying the farmer in his car when cheeses and other goods from the farm were to be delivered. This was done in a 1938 Peugeot 402 Légère. Both the kind-hearted family and the car came to mean a great deal to the boy, and when he was released in 1949 and sent home to Germany, his time in France nevertheless remained mostly a source of fond memories.
Back home in Germany, he found work at the Hanomag factory and eventually at the tire manufacturer Continental. This involved a great deal of driving, both testing at the Nürburgring and business trips, including over to France and the area around Albertville. A little more than 15 years after leaving the farm, he visited it again and was welcomed with open arms. Many more visits followed over the years. In the mid-1980s, the family was clearing out an old barn, and there stood the old Peugeot. It had, after all, survived the years well, and in 1987 the "boy" – now nearly 60 years old – was able to take it over. He brought it back to Germany on a trailer and began a restoration that was completed four years later. The car came to be used frequently at meets and events. At an international Peugeot meet in Karlsborg in 1996, with participants from all over Europe – indeed, even from Australia – the owner met a Swedish family, and through various turns of events a niece/nephew and a child became a couple, one-two-three, and were married in 2002. When our "boy" of this story passed away in 2017, the car in question, along with a small 202 Convertible, was inherited by the young couple, who were living in Sweden. The cars arrived here in the summer of 2019, and it was registered for road use here on August 13, 2019. When the black beauty unexpectedly rolled up at the Swedish Peugeot Club's 40th anniversary in September of that same year, it was something truly special. No major work has been carried out here in Sweden; it has mostly been the routine lubrication that older cars require. It has not been driven much beyond the Peugeot meet – the occasional "ice cream run" and one graduation drive.
The car comes with an owner's manual and various documentation. In addition, there are some useful parts in the trunk, as well as a couple of windshields. It is inspected and ready to drive.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Starts relatively easily, but was a bit stubborn before warming up. This may also be due to the driver and the car needing to get used to each other. During a short test drive on a smaller country road, everything appeared to work well regarding steering, clutch, gearbox, road handling, and brakes, but as with cars from the 1930s, a certain amount of planning is required. The semaphore indicators and turn signals worked at first, but their function became unreliable after a while. Comfort could be improved with newer tires, as the ones currently fitted are likely a bit hard.
As with all older cars that have been driven sparingly, an overhaul and service is recommended. It has not been checked on a lift, but from what could be seen, the vital parts looked good. It is body-on-frame construction. -
Interior condition
Cloth interior in original condition with comfortable seats, nice door panels and trim, cloth carpets, and headliner. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition, with most appearing to be original. Auxiliary gauge for water temperature. Trunk in original condition.
-
Exterior condition
Fine paintwork applied around the turn of the 80s/90s. There are some scratches and paint chips, but the paint is otherwise glossy and attractive. The brightwork, glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are in well-preserved condition considering their age. It is equipped with Michelin's sporty Pilot wheels with "blade spokes," typical of the late 1930s, with older tires. The engine compartment is in good and period-correct condition.
-
General condition
This sporty sedan, with its design and model history, and not least the fascinating life story surrounding the car, makes it an enthusiast and collector vehicle of great automotive and nostalgic-historical interest.

Facts about the model
At the end of the 1930s, the general agency for Peugeot here in Sweden shifted from Philipsons to Gjestvangs, and the 02 cars from Peugeot were sold in relatively small numbers here, barely 20 examples. Of these, two are said to have been 402 Légère. So these cars are "rare flowers" at our latitudes. The car in this auction is most likely the only one still on the road here today.
