"A car that was a popular and lively family car in France, available in many different versions. There was an open four-door, four-seat version, the Dévouvrable, as well as a two-door, two-seat convertible, the Decapotable. This example is in finely restored condition, but as always with older cars that have been driven sparingly, a service is recommended."

Description

The early history of this car is not fully known, but we do know that it was registered for road use abroad on July 1, 1948. A Peugeot enthusiast in Germany, who also owned a model 402 Légère (see that lot in the auction), had restored his car and found this one in a garage in Berlin. He went on to restore it in the late '90s.

The current owner, who inherited the car, brought it to Sweden in 2019. Here, it was registered for road use on November 15, 2024. While driving the car, play in the steering was discovered, which was rectified.

A number of useful parts are included in the trunk. The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Started easily and ran well. The air cleaner is missing and the carburetor needs attention. During a short test drive, the steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes appeared to work well. As with all older cars that have been standing for some time, an overhaul and service are recommended. Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, the vital components looked good. Body-on-frame construction.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in nicely restored condition with vinyl upholstery and textile carpets, not strictly to original specification, but well executed. A small rear seat has also been fabricated. The door panels and trim are of similar execution and condition. The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good original condition. Everything appears to work well. Good trunk space.

  • Exterior condition

Received a fresh, vibrant two-tone paint job in the late 1990s that still remains glossy and attractive. The outer rocker panels show signs of rust, but new ones are included. Chrome, glass, trim, emblems, and lighting details are in fine condition. The chrome surround and license plate have been removed but are included. A newer soft top that appears well-made and watertight. Fine steel wheels and older tires. The engine bay is well-kept and in good original condition.

  • General condition

This was no common sight on our roads when it was new, but a number were nevertheless sold to those who wanted a pleasant touring car. It was the small car in Peugeot's 02 series, and in this fine usable condition it is a delightful classic and enthusiast's car.

Owner's comment

Through our parents' and relatives' interest in Peugeot we met each other, and although we partly inherited that interest, we feel that these special cars, which mostly sit unused with us, would be better off with someone who will give them more attention and put them to use.

Facts about the model

At the Paris Motor Show in October 1935, Peugeot presented its aerodynamic creation, the model 402. It was called the Fuseau de Sochaux, loosely translated as "The Projectile from Sochaux" (the home of Peugeot's manufacturing). It was very much of its time, and several car companies were working on similar concepts, such as the Chrysler Corporation and our own Volvo Carioca. None of these became big sellers, and the concepts were abandoned relatively quickly. But Peugeot got wind under its wings, and the first model 402 remained in production until the outbreak of the Second World War. It was a relatively large car with a distinctive design featuring the headlights placed inside the grille. Cars were built in a wide variety of body styles, with two and four doors. There were various sedans, coupes and convertibles, where the earlier solution and patent for a retractable steel roof from the 401 and 601 models of 1934 was also reused in the 402 Eclipse. During the 02 era, the company showed great initiative, conducting various tests with automatic gearboxes and diesel engines, among other things. They also had an 802 with a V8 engine and a fin à la Tatra in the works. Unfortunately, it never reached production. However, they did launch an electromechanical clutch known as the Cotal. For the 1937 model year, a model 302 was added, which was slightly smaller and belonged to the mid-size segment; it too was made in a wide range of body versions, both closed and open. In addition, a legendary 302/402 Darl' mat Sport was built with three special bodies: a roadster, a convertible and a coupe. These were raced at Le Mans, among other places. A total of 104 were built, and the survivors are today highly sought-after collector's items in the price range of up to 10 million SEK. For the 1938 model year came a "hybrid" with the 402 engine and the 302 body. This resulted in a somewhat lighter body with a more powerful engine, and this version was designated the model 402 Légère (lighter and sportier). Last out was the small model 202 in the "cadet class," which arrived in 1938. It too was available with two or four doors, closed or open. The various 02 models were produced until the outbreak of the war. The only one to return after the war was the small model. It came back into production in 1946 and was now built as the model 202 BH (brake hydraulic). Various commercial vehicles were also built on the frames of the 02 models. In total, 58,748 of the model 402 were built, 16,320 of the model 402 Légère, 25,083 of the model 302 and 104,126 of the model 202. In addition, a number of commercial vehicles were produced.

At the end of the 1930s, the general agency here in Sweden shifted from Philipsons to Gjestvangs, and the 402 cars from Peugeot were sold here in relatively small numbers, reportedly fewer than 20, but two of these were indeed 402 Légère. The model 202, on the other hand, sold in somewhat greater numbers, just over 100 examples before the war and around 500 after; the most common were the four-door sedans, usually with a sunroof, but a small number of four-door and two-door open cars were also sold for those who wanted to enjoy even more sun, reportedly 15 in total. Of the small two-door open version, two roadworthy examples now exist in Sweden.
