"Today it is hard to imagine just how modern the Citroën B11 (Traction Avant) was at its introduction in 1934. It was roughly 15 to 20 years ahead of the mainstream automotive industry in its technical development.

The car on offer was restored 35 years ago, and we do not know when it was last driven. Expect that the brakes and other mechanical systems will require a complete overhaul and service before the car can be put back into use."

Description

The car was part of a collection of vehicles in Sorsele. The late car collector, Mr. Hedman, was a recognized and knowledgeable motor enthusiast who restored everything from motorcycles and tractors to cars. He worked as a caretaker for the municipality of Sorsele for nearly 40 years and became a well-known motoring figure in the area. Bilweb Auctions has now been entrusted with selling the collection on behalf of the estate. Several of the vehicles are set up on jack stands to prevent the tires from being damaged during long-term storage. The vehicles could therefore not be brought out for the photo session, and in some cases it was not possible to document the vehicles from all angles.

The following is what we have learned about the Citroën B11 from saved notes: The car was first registered on January 5, 1951, in Umeå. It was assigned the registration number AC 9032. The car then ended up in Malå and later in Husbondliden, a small village located 20 km north of Lycksele, where it was left standing in a barn. Until the car was put away in the barn, it had been owned by everyone from agronomists and car dealers to miners and bus owners. Mr. Hedman bought the car in June 1989 and brought it to Sorsele for restoration. Tires, engine parts, bearings, paint and more came from France. Bumpers, door handles, hubcaps and trim were sourced in Holland. Cross-woven original fabric came from Hungary. The fabric top and carpets were purchased from Gustavssons in Norrtälje. Two years of work were devoted to the car. The car was completed and inspected on June 10, 1991. Notes on the restoration are included, see the pictures.
We have not found an ignition key for the car, so unfortunately it is missing.
This is a distance auction. The pictures were taken by an independent photographer, and information about the vehicle and its technical condition, to the extent such information was available, has been obtained from the estate administrator. BWA has therefore not inspected the car on site at the seller's location.

Facts about the model

The Citroën Traction Avant was manufactured between 1934 and 1957. In Sweden it became known as the "Gangstercittran" ("Gangster Citroën"), owing in part to its appearances in numerous crime films. The most common version was the B11 model (Berline 11CV, that is, a sedan body in the 11CV tax class; compare with the Citroën 2CV tax class), but the model was also available with a six-cylinder engine under the name B15. The designation Traction Avant was never the official name of the car, but simply means "front-wheel drive." The model was Citroën's first front-wheel-drive car, a style icon that, in addition to France, was also manufactured in Belgium and England. The Citroën Traction Avant was first presented on April 18, 1934. Production of the various models continued until July 25, 1957. The design is regarded by many as a milestone in the automotive world and the most significant and successful standard car of its time. The cars had a four- or six-cylinder engine with overhead valves and removable liners. Other prominent advantages of the cars were precisely that they were front-wheel drive with a unitized, fully welded body without a frame and hydraulic brakes all around. Torsion bar suspension, rack-and-pinion steering (from 1936), and hydraulic shock absorbers contributed to the qualities that made the model renowned for its fine handling and comfort.
