"A robust people’s car that was also popular in the land of windmills — not least after Volvo and DAF joined forces. There was early interest in alternative fuels, which led to it being equipped for gas operation. This option was also available in Sweden at the time. It has now served as an enthusiast’s daily driver for many years, both in the Netherlands and here in Sweden. The car has been updated and regularly serviced, making it a pleasant and functional classic that performs its duties in a thoroughly dependable manner."

Description

This car was sold new in the Netherlands and was originally equipped for gas operation. After a couple of owners — a father and daughter — the current owner, a devoted Volvo enthusiast, acquired it in 1991. Over the years, he has carefully maintained and gradually updated the car. After moving to Sweden, the vehicle was registered here on July 25, 1997. After all, where else would a dedicated Volvo enthusiast live if not in Sweden? Here, he quickly became a customer at the local Volvo dealer and found some charming accessories such as a tachometer, among others.

The body has held up well and, according to information, retains its original paint except for the rear section. Following an accident in the Netherlands, a previous owner carried out a poor repair, so in 1999 the current owner replaced both rear fenders and the rear panel. The original tailgate was kept, and the entire rear section was repainted.

The interior, including the front seats and rear bench, has been replaced. To date, the car has covered approximately 550,000 km. The engine, however, has been replaced and has only 120,000 km on it. In 2009, it was also fitted with a gearbox from a newer model featuring five gears. The odometer has been replaced as well, meaning the reading does not reflect the actual mileage.

The car has been serviced regularly every year, always receiving at least oil and filter changes as needed. Included with the car are some original documents and the Dutch owner’s manual, as well as two sets of keys. The car passed inspection on April 29 this year and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts and runs smoothly with a stable engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in urban conditions, everything appeared to function well in terms of steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes. There was some play in the front suspension, possibly in the bushings. The car runs on petrol, with a standard 60-liter tank. The gas system works at idle but does not perform beyond that. The unit has been serviced and operated properly for a while, but some additional attention is needed to get the gas system fully functional again.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, all vital components appeared to be in good condition. No remarks were noted underneath at the most recent vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good condition. The current owner has upgraded it with different front seats, a rear bench, and other details. It offers good comfort and is overall tidy and well-kept for a driver’s car. The seats are comfortable, and the steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in proper working order. All electrical functions operate as they should, though there is some noise from the heater fan — it sounds as if something is rubbing against the fan blades. Accessories include an original tachometer, a newer Volvo stereo, new door seals, and more.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to have its original paint (except for the rear section) in dark green, color code 142. Everything is in good, usable condition with normal wear consistent with age and mileage. There are some scratches, stone chips, and a small dent on the top of the right front fender. The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting components are in good condition. Equipped with working auxiliary fog lights. The aluminum wheels and Michelin tires are in good shape, showing normal use. A charming detail is the small side indicator lights on the front fenders — a reminder of its time in the Netherlands.

  • General condition:

The Volvo 240 is a piece of Swedish social and automotive history that has now been on our roads for 50 years. This particular car has been driven and cared for by the same owner for over 30 years and stands today as a fine classic and enthusiast’s vehicle. For those who want something a little out of the ordinary, this car offers a few fun extras — not least a complete gas conversion system and a touch of Dutch character.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240 was introduced in August 1974 as an updated version of the 140 series, designed by Jan Wilsgaard. The model has since become a true icon of Swedish life. Whether you came home from the maternity ward in a taxi, went to IKEA with your parents, or rode with your grandparents to the countryside — almost everyone in Sweden has a connection to these cars.

Over the years, countless versions and updates were made. When the new 740 model arrived in 1984, many thought the “old” 240’s days were over — but Volvo shifted gears and continued to develop it further.

Throughout its production run, the 240 was offered with various engines — petrol, diesel, and even turbocharged versions — and at one point, a gas-powered variant. It was available in two-, four-, and five-door body styles. Different trim levels added sportiness or luxury, but the most authentic examples were perhaps the DL and GL models, true symbols of Sweden’s welfare-era motoring.

The GL model was initially the more upmarket version but was gradually repositioned as the entry-level standard model by the 1979 model year. For 1980, all models received interior-adjustable mirrors, and the B23A engine was introduced as standard for the GL.

There were certainly faster or flashier cars on the market, but few could match the Volvo 240’s unique blend of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety — the down-to-earth family car. In total, over 2.8 million Volvo 240s were built between 1974 and 1993, and today, this once humble people’s car has become a cherished classic on its 50th anniversary.
