"A very beautiful Mercedes model that is worth preserving for the future."

Description

A Mercedes-Benz that has been passed from father to son. The father drove it occasionally, but it has been sitting idle for the last 20 years under the son's ownership. The car was last inspected in August 2004. The body needs a complete overhaul, although some parts are in relatively good condition. There is a lot of rust, poorly patched areas of the car, and a damage from a falling ladder on the right rear fender.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine turns over, but it doesn't start (see video). The spark plugs and ignition components have been replaced, and the engine fires with starter fluid. The engine has not been rebuilt during the time the car has been in the family.

  • Interior condition:

Parts of the interior are in need of renovation. The floor mats and door panels are in poor condition. The chairs have been reupholstered in synthetic leather and for the discerning, they might be reupholstered in real leather. The dashboard is in good working condition, as are the instruments. The function of these cannot be guaranteed since the car has not been able to start or be driven.

  • Exterior condition:

Need for bodywork renovation. Some parts are completely fine, but others are in poorer condition. The right rear fender is really bad. The rear hatch is a bit dented at the top. Decent moldings and bumpers. The car has not been lifted, but what can be seen underneath looks relatively good.

  • General condition:

In summary, we assess that this is a relatively good restoration project.

Owner's comment

The car was used by my father for decades during recurring classic car gatherings. Over this time, various improvements and repairs were also made. In the early 1990s, the car was decommissioned and stored in a barn until 2004. In 2005, I took over the car, and after an oil change and inspection, it was put through a vehicle inspection. A remark was made on the right front brake, requiring a follow-up inspection. The car was subsequently stored again and brought back into the light in 2021. After a review of the electrical system, the car was test-started and driven a short distance. Recently, the car was test-started using some starter fluid. The engine fired but did not start due to a lack of fuel. The starter motor was used to test the drive function in both first gear and reverse, which was satisfactory.

Facts about the model

The 190 SL was powered by a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder SOHC engine. Based on the 300 SL's straight-six, it retained an 85 mm bore but had a 4.3 mm shorter stroke, reduced to 83.6 mm. Equipped with dual Solex carburetors, it produced 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS). In a tuned form, this engine was later used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models.

The car was available as either a soft-top convertible or with a removable hardtop. An optional small cross-seat for a third passenger was also offered. During its early years, the 190 SL was available as a sport racing model with a small plexiglass windshield, minimalist single-piece leather seats, and aluminum doors. In 1959, the rear window of the hardtop was enlarged.
