"What a fantastic item!"

Description

This particular example of the very rare Abarth 850 Scorpione was registered to Firma Oves Bilar in Varberg around Midsummer 1960. Barely three months later, it was sold to AB Bröderna Modin, also located in Varberg. In June 1961, they sold the sports car back to Oves Bilar. On August 9, 1961, the current owner purchased it and kept it until his death. After just over a year of driving the rev-happy engine, it was time for an engine and brake renovation. One might suspect a somewhat enthusiastic driver behind the wheel of this Italian specialty with a rear-mounted engine. The work then cost 776 kronor and 25 öre. Grinding the camshaft was a modest 29 kronor. The crankshaft grinding appears to have been significantly more complicated, costing a whole 86 kronor. The work was carried out by AB Nils Bjuhr in Örebro.

Older registration documents are included as well as an invoice for the engine renovation and various newspaper clippings about Abarth.

In the motor magazine Fart issue 4 from 1960, the model is described as follows: Small but perfectly formed. For two people, however, the car constitutes an excellent touring vehicle.
In the very positive article, the heavy-feeling brakes are turned into a positive aspect. They prevent sudden and involuntary locking of the wheels. The clutch was hard to press, but that's the case with racing cars, so it was just considered tough. Good road-holding properties and sportily firm suspension. The engine began to pull over 2,000 rpm, and the peak torque seems to be around 5,500 rpm.
New price in 1960: 18,000 SEK
Top speed: 164 km/h
Maximum power at 6,500 rpm.
The beautiful wooden box shown in the pictures is empty.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine does not turn over, likely because the car has been unused and not started for many years. Due to this, nothing under the Technical section has been tested. The car lacks a battery. The original engine has been replaced at some point, but an engine block is included. It is said to have been in this car, but we do not know for certain. The crankshaft caps are missing.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good condition but needs cleaning. The chrome rings around the gauges are somewhat corroded. A trim piece is loose. The window crank on the right side is missing.

  • Exterior condition:

An older repaint has cracked in some places. There are a few minor damages and defects in the paint. The chrome is porous. Bumpers are missing. The hubcaps are rusty. The external door handle on the right side is stuck in the open position, so the door cannot be closed/locked. The important emblems are in place, as shown in the pictures. It was raining when the photos were taken.

  • General condition:

An excellent specimen of a very rare Italian sports car. Start it up and drive as is, improving over time, or undertake a major renovation to bring it to top condition. The car has not been examined on a lift. No serious rust issues have been noted during a visual inspection. There might be some at the joint between the front plate and the inner fender, down low.

Facts about the model

Allemano was a small but creative coachbuilder that also assembled cars under its own name. They built prototypes and small series for other manufacturers, especially Italian ones.

No one knows exactly how many were built of this model, but it is believed that there were fewer than 200 units and that probably around 60 remain in the world today.

The doors, as well as the front and rear hatches, are aluminum-clad over a steel frame.
