Description

A wagon that feels safe, while conveying the feeling of being sporty. It is possibly the light blue colour together with wider wheels that give the car its expression.

The car has had 15 registered owners since new, but the same user for the last 12 years. The odometer now reads 22,240 km. At 100,000 km, these gauges spin around and start over at zero again. We think it has spun around a few revolutions. Possibly 300,000 km, in other words. The current owner has previously, sporadically, used the car as an advertising pillar for the company. It has been well maintained by the current owner, who stored it in the garage during the winter. In his garage, there is also an American enthusiast car that the family uses. So they are now selling the Volvo and hoping it will bring joy to the next Amazon enthusiast. The original instruction manual is missing, but the spare wheel and the original jack are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a B18 engine of 1.8 litres and 4-speed m40 box. With a single carburettor, the stated output is 75 hp. The owner has had double SU carburettors fitted. The output with dual carburettors should be around 90 hp, according to information at the time. The engine was overhauled in 2021 and runs very nicely. The brakes were renovated at the same time. What stands out technically is that the car is equipped with a catalytic converter. In the summer of 2021, new tyres with white removable sidewalls were also fitted, on newly manufactured 5.5-inch wheels. Runs nice and steady on the road. Equipped with period-typical functioning car radio from the brand Grundig.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior in black artificial leather. The interior has normal wear, with some damage to the front seats.

See picture. There are some minor cracks in the padding on the dashboard. The headliner is in almost new condition. Amazons came with a full set of rubber mats as standard, here it has been replaced with professionally made textile mats. The interior of the boot compartment has fared well.

  • Exterior condition:

The body panels have a good fit with nice door shut line. The car was repainted in 2009, after a longer period of storage.

We believe that the work was partly carried out as student vocational training. Upon closer inspection, certain shortcomings are visible. The roof has some minor dents, and the bonnet as well. They haven't quite finished the back of the sand plates, which have probably been replaced. See the pictures. There are some rust spots visible at the right rear edge of the wing. The right front door has small rust damage on the outside at the bottom. See pictures. The bumpers are in usable condition. The rear bumper has received a small dent in the middle. Some trim strips are pinched during assembly. The engine compartment, which was painted in 2021, is nice and tidy with correct details, such as the round washer reservoir. The front doors have some play in the hinges.

  • General condition:

The car gives a good overall impression. There are some remarks regarding the exterior. Its also been retrofitted with a catalytic converter.

Facts about the model

The new estate model was presented at the Stockholm motor show on February 17, 1962. The car was almost identical to the sedan model up to the back seat. But the estate model was 4 centimeters longer. The extension sits behind the rear axle. The so-called sand plate, at the bottom behind the wheel, was longer and lacked the two longitudinal pressings. In order to have a lower loading floor, th the rear suspensionhad been redesigned, and the rear axle received different support arms. The estate wagon was made to carry more weight than the sedan model. The maximum towing weight for the estate was 1200 kg. While the sedan model had maximum 1000 kg. The rims were also wider. They were 4,5 inches against the sedan model's 4 inches. The tailgate was split. Volvo's engineers had thought about and installed strong hinges and braces with a well-thought-out locking device. This made it possible to drive with the hatches open in different ways, in case the load was longer than the car's interior space. For the 1965 model a series of improvements were introduced to the Volvo Amazon. Front seat passengers were given a curve handle on the dashboard to hold on to. The front seats were newly engineered using medical expertise for better ergonomics. All Amazons also received front disc brakes from the 1965 model onwards. The estate wagon got a brake servo.

In recent years, the Volvo Amazon has gone from being a

car that was scrapped at breakneck speed, to becoming a popular vintage car. The information on the exact number of Amazons manufactured varies, but according to the Swedish Volvo Amazon Club, the number in total is 667,448. Of which 297,000 Volvo Amazons were sold in Sweden during the 14 years the car was manufactured. In 2016, according to the statistics, roughly 8 percent of all Amazons sold in Sweden remained. Two percent were in traffic. In ten years, the number of Volvo Amazons had decreased by 13 percent or 3,572 cars.
