Description

The car was bought new by Martin Cielens. On July 15, 1968, Mr. Cielens walked into the Benson & Hartman dealership at 1561 West Liberty Avenue in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. There he ordered a Mercury Montego with a powerful cyclone 302 V8 engine and automatic transmission. He chose the optional black vinyl roof, power steering and AM radio. He also spent money on better tires than standard. With the options he chose, the bill ended up at $3,463 and 64 cents. We know all this because of the abundant documentation that comes with the car. We also think he really liked his car. He kept the car for the rest of his life. In 2011, the car was sold at the big market in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Via Ivars car museum in Hoting, the car ended up in Sundsvall and became a northerner. Now 11 years later, the car is back in Hoting and was planned to be included as a permanent part of the exhibition. The car has had 2 owners in the US as far as we know. After the import to Sweden, it has had 1 user. Ivars Car museum are making room in the exhibition for other cars and is therefore having some vehicles sold. This car is basically untouched since new. It mostly retains the original paintwork, some body panels have probably been painted, but it is very difficult to see. An entire portfolio of documentation, brochures and manuals comes with the car. The seat belts in the back seat still have their protective plastic.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with 302 cu.in V8. Stated power with 2-port carburettor is 210 hp. (Stated top speed was 181 km/h and 0-100 km/h in 10.6 seconds.) Equipped with 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. Runs very nicely and without squeaks or creaks from the bodywork.

  • Interior condition:

Nice black original interior with nice interior ceiling. There is a repaired damage at the far end of the driver's seat backrest. See picture. The carpet has become a little sun-bleached, a replacement would give the whole interior a lift. Original accessory radio that the first owner paid extra for. Very nice and untouched trunk.

  • Exterior condition:

Very nice vinyl roof. The paintwork is fine and appears to be mostly original. With the reservation that some panel could be professionally repainted. Moldings and chrome are in good condition and are in line with their age.

  • General condition:

A nice and well-maintained Mercury. In relation to the car's age, there are hardly any remarks.

Facts about the model

Taking its name from Montego Bay, Jamaica, the nameplate made its first appearance for 1967 in the Canadian market as part of the Mercury-derived Meteor model line. For 1968, the Mercury Montego made its debut across North America, becoming the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Torino. Officially falling under the Comet banner, the Montego was new to the Mercury lineup in 1968, replacing the Capri and Caliente badges and restricting the Comet to a single body style entry-level vehicle in the process. Simplistically, it was a new badge on a redesigned unit-body platform (based on the Ford Fairlane) that retained the previous year's 116-inch wheelbase dimension for non-wagons, including the MX trim level available in four body styles. Power options were plentiful, including two versions of the 302-cu.in. V-8 (210hp and 230hp, the visual difference being a two- or four-barrel carburetor, respectively) and two versions of the larger 390 rated for 265hp or 325hp (the same carburetor usage applies here as well). Backing these engines were a three- or four-speed manual, or the Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. Mercury's sleek redesign resulted in a sales increase of 36,349 units over 1967; total 1968 Comet/Montego production was 117,482.
