"It’s not often a Volvo Pickup with Floby bodywork comes up for sale, especially one in such well-preserved condition. Sparingly driven and carefully maintained, this example has served as a show vehicle and company mascot for a Borås-based business for over 20 years."

Description

This 1956 Volvo PV445 Pickup with Floby bodywork was sold new in Sweden and is an uncommon and charming example of Swedish coachbuilding history. Based on Volvo’s PV445 chassis, the pickup features specialist bodywork produced by Floby, one of Sweden’s established coachbuilders of the period.

Looking back at its history, the pickup has had seven registered owners, although its ownership history can only be traced back through the three most recent. The owner from 1991 to 2003 carried out an extensive renovation of the pickup, supported by period photographs documenting work on both the bodywork and engine. The engine also underwent a full renovation in 2000–2001.

Included with the pickup are inspection reports dating back to 1981, when the recorded mileage was 34,486 km. However, the exact total mileage cannot be verified.

The next owner purchased the vehicle in 2003, before the current Borås-based company acquired it in 2004. Since then, it has served as a company mascot, regularly attending local classic car shows and events.

The pickup has always been well maintained and kept in good running condition by its current owner. Following the renovation, it was originally painted blue but was repainted red before the current owner acquired it. The vehicle is permanently exempt from inspections and is ready to be driven and enjoyed by its next owner.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The pickup starts immediately with a little choke and benefits from a minute or so to warm up properly. The engine runs smoothly with a steady idle and no unusual noises. On the road, it feels stable, with a smooth-shifting gearbox and solid brakes.

The engine bay is clean and tidy, fitted with the standard 6-volt battery system and an additional battery to power the electric power steering conversion, making the pickup much easier to drive and park. It has also recently been fitted with new tyres.

  • Interior condition

Interior is very clean and tidy throughout. The bench seat has a small 4 cm tear in the vinyl upholstery (see pictures). The headliner is complete, with a few minor marks and stains, while the door cards and rubber flooring are in good condition. The dashboard is clean and tidy, with working instruments and gauges. The dashboard panel retains a bright, shiny finish, with some minor oxidation around the gauges, hardly surprising for a vehicle approaching 70 years of age.

  • Exterior condition

A very presentable pickup with straight bodywork, free from noticeable damage or signs of rust issues. The same applies to the underbody, which is exceptionally clean and tidy. The vehicle has never been driven during the winter months and has always been stored in a warm, dry garage.

The paintwork is bright and shiny, with no significant issues apart from a tiny 1 cm dent on the bonnet, which is hardly noticeable. The lower edge of the driver's door sits slightly proud and could benefit from a minor adjustment if desired.

The wooden framework in the cab and doors is solid, as is the wooden flatbed, which also features drop sides.

A nice set of steel wheels with bright chrome hubcaps completes the appearance. The front chrome bumper is shiny and presentable, although there is some pitting in the chrome behind the number plate and in a few other areas (see pictures).

  • General condition

You may have to wait quite some time before another Floby-bodied Volvo Pickup comes up for sale. This example is ready to be driven and enjoyed immediately, making it an ideal mascot or promotional vehicle for any company, especially with Volvo celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2027. What better way to join the celebrations than behind the wheel of this charming piece of Swedish motoring history.
