"Well-preserved early and rare model that has survived the years without youthful and enthusiastic modifications."

Description

It was sold new and delivered to its first owner, Erhard Nyström in Köping, in April 1958. His wife Maria took over the car before the next Maria in Köping, Norestig by surname, whose son took over when the time came. In 2001 it ended up in Gothenburg. The current owner from Kungsbacka bought the Amazon in 2013 with the ambition of restoring everything to original condition. The engine bay was painted with rust-proofing paint and the paintwork was worn original cellulose, with the roof painted red sometime in the sixties. The car had no rust to speak of, but it was taken apart in stages, parts were blasted, and old rust-proofing was removed from the fenders. The paintwork was also done in stages. The current owner has placed great emphasis on securing all original details, as early '58s stand out with many specific features. Under "Owner's Comments" he has listed work performed, inspection, and previous owners. The most recent and final passed inspection was carried out on 2017-07-31, although a voluntary classic vehicle test was performed in 2021.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The B16 engine runs lively and smooth with its distinctive sound. Gearbox, clutch, chassis feel, and brakes all have that well-known Amazon character. Untouched gearbox and new clutch. The engine was bored to an oversize with new pistons and bearings, and the cylinder head was rebuilt with a new Isky camshaft and converted to unleaded with new seats and guides. Stainless steel exhaust system.

On early B16 cars (such as the '57 and early '58), the front axle member was painted in the car's original factory color. Later (toward 1959), the chassis components became standardized black. The early '58 still used older brake components with unique dimensions shared with the '57, before the systems were updated and standardized for the 1959 model year.

  • Interior condition

New upholstery on the front seats; the rears are nicely preserved originals, as are the door panels, headliner, and carpets. The gray original rubber mats are especially fine, particularly the one in the trunk. The gear shift knob and the Amazon emblem on the radio cover are specific to an early 1958. Some cracking in the panel around the instrument cluster.

  • Exterior condition

Older well-maintained paint from 2016-2019, still in like-new condition. The original chrome on the bumpers has a couple of marks from the passage of time, but the owner has chosen to keep it that way for the sake of originality. The left front door sticks out slightly at the rear edge, can be adjusted. Newer Firestone whitewall bias-ply tires made in the USA give the whole car the slightly more luxurious touch that Volvo wanted to play on. The early '58 still had the two-piece chrome "drowned flies" on the trunk lid. On the '59, these were replaced by a single, streamlined chrome cover. All-red taillight lenses, while the '59 received the more modern lenses with a separate orange section for the turn signals. Also note the text on the lock bolt and the extra hook for securing the hood, accentuated by Volvo's special message to its Amazon customers (picture). More stainless steel that was specific to the model includes the wiper arms and the grille.

  • General condition

Representative and correct in every detail for those who know their Amazon history. A handsome, early red/white Amazon in deliberately extra fine condition sits high on the wish list for many enthusiasts, whether more or less Volvo-minded.

Facts about the model

An early Amazon 1958 (B-series) is essentially a '57. When comparing an early '58 to a '59 (C-series), there are a number of unique older details that remain only on the early '58s before Volvo gradually modernized the model during the year. The Amazon was launched as the successor to the hugely successful PV 444 and was, by comparison, considerably more modern, not least through its fifties design with a ponton body and four-door version. A two-door version arrived in October 1961 and a wagon in February 1962. The man behind the design was Jan Wilsgaard. Safety thinking was already a priority at Volvo in those days, and the Amazon had mounting points for seat belts as standard equipment from its debut. In 1959, the Volvo Amazon became the first mass-produced car in the world to feature three-point seat belts in the front seats as standard equipment, but as early as 1957 the model was prepared for three-point belts, which could then be obtained as optional equipment. The parking brake lever in the Amazon was mounted to the left of the driver instead of between the seats. The reason is said to be that model versions with a full bench front seat and column shift were planned. However, no such model ever went into production. During the sixties, the Amazon was Volvo's volume car and a great success in a number of export markets. In 1966, the Volvo 140 was launched, but the Amazon continued to be produced until 1970. As a more affordable alternative and to compensate for the discontinuation of the PV544 in 1965, the Volvo Amazon Favorit was launched in 1966. The Favorit was a simpler and cheaper variant of the Amazon and was taken out of production in 1968. During the production years, a number of modifications were made to the Amazon, but the basic shape was retained throughout the 14 years the model was manufactured. A total of 667,323 Amazons were built between October 1956 and July 1970.
