Tatraplan T600 2.0 — 1951

An exciting Swedish-market example that can be completed in its current condition to let an Iron Curtain-exotic and historically significant piece of automotive engineering wear down some country roads again. This is the model with an air-cooled flat-four and nothing else.

"This model is a rare gem, and the marque's enthusiasts and connoisseurs hold it in high regard, particularly in its country of origin."

Description

It was registered for road use in Sweden in November 1951 and delivered to its first owner in Vaggeryd, Småland, at the start of 1952. Seven years later, in 1959, the car was taken off the road and removed from the register in February 1963. Its history thereafter is unknown – it was presumably stored away in the area – until the car resurfaced in 1979 in the neighboring village of Skillingaryd with a new owner. He carried out a light restoration including paint and interior, as well as a pre-registration that remains valid to this day, meaning it serves as an approved identity, and this example can therefore – with all documentation intact – undergo registration inspection with the registration number KHW908 already assigned to it at the time. Egon Andersson, well known in Tatra circles, took over the car in 1984 and, according to hearsay, also rebuilt the engine. The current owner bought the car in 2013 from his friend and has moved the project forward with, among other things, a new electrical system made in the Czech Republic, fuel system, and brakes. The engine has been running and the owner has driven it a bit in 1st gear and reverse outside the barn where the car is kept.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The original engine is in place, and according to oral history, it was rebuilt in the nineties by a previous owner, Egon Andersson of Örebro, a well-known Tatra figure in enthusiast circles. The current owner has had a new electrical system from the Czech Republic installed, as well as rebuilt and modified Solex carburetors from Volkswagen Type 3 and Type 4 engines. At the same time, the fuel system was serviced and the tank was cleaned. The brakes have also been overhauled, but at present the pedal goes to the floor. The car lacks a battery, and the function of the central lubrication system has not been tested.

  • Interior condition

Interior renovated in the eighties with a well-preserved freshness. Nice headliner. The instruments have not been tested for function. Good carpets.

  • Exterior condition

Presentable from a distance, painted in the Citroën color Bleu Grignan, which is close to the original blue metallic. The car was painted in 1980 and has marks, scratches, small bubbles, and some signs of rust in the doors. The underside with the frame looks fine. The bumpers are in mixed condition with poorer or no chrome and are included loose, as are restored semaphore turn signals and a hood trim strip from another example, where the holes do not match the holes in the hood of this car. Older bias-ply tires with good tread. Keys for the doors and hoods are missing.

  • General condition

A sought-after oddity in the automotive world with attractive collector value. With a comparatively modest amount of work, this example could be put back on the road in a driver-friendly finish and character.

Owner's comment

Jon Remmers, who performed the carburetor conversion, comments: "The carburetor bodies are 32 PDSIT, i.e. VW Type 3, but the throttle plates are 34 PDSIT. The carburetors are very similar between the VW bus and the Type 3. The main differences are that the buses have 2 mm larger throttle plates and that the buses have a system where the idle is adjusted with a central screw. That system is often troublesome, and since the accompanying plumbing would have marred your engine bay, I chose to use carburetor bodies from the Type 3 instead. What I did was take my big bin of donor Type 2/3 carburetors and pick out the finest parts to put together a set of good carburetors. I disassembled three or four sets of carburetors to build these. What has been done with them is that I ultrasonically cleaned them and assembled them with new rebuild kits. The carburetors fitted to the Tatra are good carburetors."

Facts about the model

The Tatraplan T600 was manufactured in Czechoslovakia in 6,335 examples from 1948 to 1952. Until the spring of 1951, production took place at the Tatra factory in Koprivnice, and from late 1951 at the Skoda factory in Mladá Boleslav. These models had an air-cooled four-cylinder engine of 1952 cm3. It was rear-mounted, and an interesting piece of trivia is that Ferdinand Porsche was acquainted with the designer Hans Ledwinka. It is also relatively easy to fit a VW or Porsche engine in the car, which some owners did when spare parts for the Tatra engines ran dry. And in the late 1960s, after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia, it became impossible to find spare parts for the cars.

The auction car, with chassis number 76178, was manufactured in Koprivnice in August 1951, that is, after regular production had ceased there, but before production started at the Skoda factory. A leftover chassis number sequence was used, which is why the chassis number is lower than that of the last regular Koprivnice car that rolled off the line in May. The cars subsequently built at the Skoda factory have a completely different chassis number series.

It is a popular myth that the engine cover changed from pointed to rounded in connection with the production move to the Skoda factory, but the change was made considerably earlier. The change from white to brown gauges does not coincide either, but by all accounts occurred somewhat later. According to the owner of the auction car (who has conducted extensive research on the marque), a total of 577 Tatra vehicles were imported to Sweden, of which 184 examples were built at the Koprivnice factory and the remainder came from the Skoda factory. According to information from today's Czech Tatra enthusiasts, many of the cars were allocated by the Czechoslovak embassy to trusted Swedes, for example those with party-political affiliations or those considered favorable to the Czechoslovak regime. The cars were delivered through a frequently cited general agent, Lindblads Motor AB, a subsidiary of Philipsons Automobil AB.
