"This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda ticks all the right boxes for the discerning enthusiast, with its desirable silver exterior, black leather interior rather than MB-Tex, and no notable rust issues. Sparingly driven since its restoration and always stored in a heated garage, it remains in superb condition."

Description

The car has been lightly driven by its current owner over the past 18 years, used exclusively during the summer months and never driven in winter. It has always been stored in a heated garage. In 2013, the Kugelfischer fuel injection pump and ignition distributor were sent to Germany for specialist overhaul at a cost of approximately €4,500.

The car underwent its final Swedish inspection on 18 August 2021 and is now permanently exempt from periodic inspections.

Today, the car still presents in a super condition, with no notable rust issues — one of the most important considerations when purchasing a Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda. Just look at the detailed photographs of the underbody to appreciate its condition.

Following the restoration, the car was delivered with the odometer reset to zero and has covered just 1 937 km over the past 18 years.

Another important and expensive upgrade is the black leather upholstery, rather than the MB-Tex synthetic vinyl commonly used by Mercedes-Benz during this period.

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL underwent an extensive bodywork and mechanical restoration by specialists Bär & Co. in Germany in 2007. A summary of the work carried out is listed below:

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts immediately, with the engine settling into a steady idle and no unusual noises. During our test drive, the car performed well, although there was some slight hesitation, possibly due to older fuel and limited use over the past year. On the road, it feels very stable, with a smoothly shifting automatic gearbox and solid brakes.

The only other issue noted was that the indicators were not working, possibly due to a blown fuse. The engine bay is exceptionally clean and tidy. The car is permanently exempt from inspections, although a routine service and fresh fuel would be recommended.

The car sits on a very nice set of steel wheels with bright chrome hubcaps and older tyres that remain in good condition all round.

  • Interior condition

Interior is in superb condition, virtually looking like new, with no noticeable damage. The black leather seats are beautifully preserved, complemented by matching carpets, panels, door cards, trim and headliner, all in excellent condition.

The dashboard is equally impressive, with bright chrome detailing, clean and working instruments and gauges, along with a Becker Europa radio.

  • Exterior condition

A wonderful-looking car in every respect, beautifully presented in classic silver with a black interior, arguably one of the most attractive colour combinations. The bodywork is straight, with excellent panel fit and no noticeable dents, damage or significant rust issues. The boot compartment is equally impressive, while the underbody still looks almost like new, with no visible rust or damage. The quality of the renovation clearly reflects professional workmanship.

The paintwork is bright and clean, with no noticeable scratches or marks. The only points worth mentioning are two small paint blisters on the front wings, three along the edge of the left rear wing and a small 1 cm mark on the bonnet edge. These are minor imperfections that are hardly noticeable unless examined closely.

The chrome and glasswork are in excellent condition throughout. The convertible soft top is also very well preserved, fitting neatly with no damage, apart from a small 2 cm mark along the centre of the rear edge.

  • General condition

Having sold many of these cars over the years, this example stands out as one of the best in all respects, particularly for its excellent overall condition and lack of significant rust issues. With just a routine service and fresh fuel recommended, it is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
