"This car never goes unnoticed. It exudes an aura of bygone elegance and understated luxury, combined with the touch of sporty character that Bentley has always embodied, regardless of model year or era. Restored to an exquisite condition with all the right details in place. It runs well, but as with any car that has spent extended periods in storage, a thorough inspection is recommended."

Description

Imported from England and registered on October 29, 1986. The current owner acquired the car on April 13, 1987. He commissioned a complete restoration by Competition Motors in Alunda — everything from a full chassis renovation to its current excellent condition — without regard to cost. The car was registered for road use in Sweden on October 20, 1992. At the 2010 inspection, the odometer showed 35,360 miles, and it now reads 35,768 miles. Thus, it has been driven only 408 miles over 15 years — equivalent to about 653 kilometers.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Started easily and ran smoothly with a calm, steady engine and drivetrain. Due to less-than-ideal weather, no extended test drive was performed — only a short run on the property — but everything appeared to function well. The owner pointed out a few small oil drops on the floor after storage. It has not been inspected on a lift, but given that it was restored and has seen very limited use since, everything visible appeared to be in good condition, including vital components.

  • Interior condition:

Beautifully restored interior in original specification. Seats, rear bench, door panels, headliner, and carpets are all in excellent condition in light gray. The area around the sunroof is tight and well-fitted. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in fine condition, with attractive wood trim. The cigar lighter near the mirror, on the inside of the right rear C-pillar, is missing. Everything appears to function properly except for one of the direction indicators, which was not working during inspection — possibly due to an issue with the control switch. Older radio, not tested.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted during the full restoration over 35 years ago. Since then, it has mostly been garage-kept and driven sparingly. Refinished in Regency Red (reportedly previously blue). There is a small area of paint flaking on the right front edge of the hood, as well as a minor blemish on the right front wheel arch. The sunroof operates smoothly and adds to the car’s charm. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting details are all in excellent condition. Wheels, hubcaps, and tires are also in good shape, though possibly showing some age. Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are equally well-preserved.

  • General condition:

The design, condition, and aura — combined with a delightful color scheme featuring gleaming chrome, leather, wood, and beautiful details — make this a truly special and elegant car. The Bentley models of the 1950s are highly sought after and carry the unmistakable character of their era. A magnificent classic and an enthusiast’s car in every sense.

Facts about the model

The Bentley R-Type was the brand’s second production series after World War II, manufactured between 1952 and 1955. Bentley offered a standard factory body but also commissioned bodies from various coachbuilders such as H.J. Mulliner & Co and Park Ward, among others. The R-Type replaced the Bentley Mark VI and was sometimes also referred to as the Mark VII.

Under the hood was a straight six-cylinder 4.6-liter engine producing 130 hp. It came with a four-speed manual gearbox, with a four-speed automatic available as an option. The R-Type was a contemporary of the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, with only minor differences — primarily the grille and carburetor setup.

A total of 2,531 R-Types were produced, of which 295 were coachbuilt by external manufacturers, while the sister model was produced in only 760 examples. Thanks to Bentley’s racing heritage and its twin SU Type H6 carburetors, the R-Type carried a sportier image, contributing to its commercial success.

Of the total production, 208 were the faster R-Type Continental versions. These featured the same engine but with modified carburetors, a different intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and rear axle ratio. This made the R-Type Continental the fastest four-seater production car in the world at the time — perfectly reinforcing Bentley’s image as the sportier marque.

The R-Type was also produced in sleek and elegant coupé and cabriolet versions by various coachbuilders. By the mid-1950s, the Bentley S1 succeeded the model and carried the torch forward.
