Volvo PV831 — 1951

A classic carriage in a fine and nicely renovated working condition, the latter defined as a state of a vehicle that is functional for use. User-friendly and representative, in other words.

"The driving experience is solid and stable, the typical sound from a side-valve six is a reassuring ticking, the turning circle is delightfully tight, and the lack of power steering is barely noticeable."

Description

The car's adventures prior to its re-registration in 1980, following restoration, can be explored in the National Archives if one wishes. It has had several owners since then, initially on the east coast and now on the west coast. The owner who re-registered the car also restored it in the late seventies, and the vehicle has remained in excellent condition since then. It has driven barely 400 kilometers since the latest and final inspection in 2017, with the current owner reportedly covering only a few of these. The recent years of inactivity have prompted a brake overhaul, as this type of machine benefits from regular mechanical movement. Today, the car has been freshly serviced, and the brakes are efficient and in good condition. A bit of trivia: the car has appeared in several film productions, the most recent being The Restaurant, where it was featured in a lengthy dialogue scene with Suzanne Reuter in the back seat.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It has recently undergone a major service and also a brake overhaul/refurbishment. It starts easily once the fuel reaches the carburetor, the gearbox feels clear and pleasant, and the brakes grip hard, nicely and straight when pressed.

  • Interior condition:

Clean and neat interior; the rubber mats are actually original, and if you care for them with gentle products, they should retain their elasticity in the future too. Attractive instruments, the taxi meter is intact, and the dividing partitions between the front and rear seats slide easily.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint from the 1980s has held up well, but the hood has some traces of characteristic spray filler bubbles. Newer tires in the correct size. A practical and sought-after bike rack where two classic bicycles fit nicely. Modern mountain bikes with thicker tires, however, have a harder time fitting.

  • General condition:

Genuine overall impression with a user-friendly approach, and moreover, it's nice to occasionally be able to travel with a larger group in the enthusiast car.

Facts about the model

The Volvo PV800 series, popularly called both the "Sedan" and the less flattering "Sow", was introduced already before the war, in 1938. The car was for a long time synonymous with taxi transport. In the fall of 1950, the model PV830, the auction car, was updated. The changes were limited to a new front in the style of the PV444 and the light truck L340. From 1953, it could also be delivered with individual front suspension. At the same time, a luxury variant intended for executive use, called "Disponent", was introduced. The car was equipped with an extensive list of equipment, which included more luxurious interior materials, a radio, a clock, white sidewall tires, fog lights, and side finders. At the end of 1957, Volvo discontinued the production of the PV800 series, without presenting any successor. Volvo needed the production capacity for other models, as the sales of the PV544 had picked up and they were about to present the Amazon. With the PV800 series, the entire taxi market for Volvo disappeared, as the Amazon was too small to be used as a taxi. It would be ten years before Volvo could present a new car suitable for taxi operations, in the form of the Volvo 140.
