"The car has been kept in a warm garage and has seen minimal use since 2016. Around that time, the fuel pump and water pump were replaced. The car runs and drives but requires a proper warm-up before use. It will need a review of the fuel system and carburetor, along with a general engine service."

Description

This 1959 Kapitän has remained in the same family since new, with only three registered owners. Lovingly cared for and always stored in a heated garage, it has stayed remarkably free from major rust issues. Repainted around 1973, it has since been used mostly for special occasions, primarily in summer. For the past ten years, it’s been in storage with very minimal use, but it remains in running and driving condition. A comprehensive review, servicing, and final inspection will be needed for it to qualify for inspection exemption. It was only driven out of the garage for photos, as it currently lacks a valid inspection. This well-preserved car boasts a wonderful family history, detailed below in the owner’s comments.

Originally priced at 15,000 SEK in Sweden, it stood out from models like the Volvo PV 544, which was priced at 9,000 SEK. This luxury version features a 2.5 L straight-six engine and a three-speed manual transmission, with separate foldable front seats distinguishing it from the base model’s full-width front bench.

Included are all original service records, handbooks, and some older inspection papers. The owner states the mileage is 135,974 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

As mentioned, the car requires servicing and a review, primarily focusing on the fuel system and carburetor. The engine runs smoothly, and it can drive, although it has only been driven a few hundred meters while taking the photos. It will also need a final inspection to become inspection-exempt, with the last one completed in 2014. The car is fitted with newer tires and features nice chrome hubcaps.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is original, complete, and in good overall condition. While the seats show some sun bleaching and marks on the vinyl, they remain intact. The headliner is in nice shape, and the door cards exhibit some age-related wear, with the driver’s side door handle being worn. The carpet and mats are complete but require cleaning. The dashboard is in good condition, featuring the original gauges, while the steering wheel shows some signs of wear. Overall, the interior retains its classic charm and reflects the car's history.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight and solid, showing no major rust issues. Some surface rust is present on the edge of the driver’s side door frame, along with a small blister on the rear driver’s side wheel arch and around the fuel tank (see pictures). The underbody is clean and tidy, with no visible rust problems. The car was repainted in its original black color around 1973, and the paintwork has held up very well, presenting nicely overall. There are a few paint chips around the wheel arches and a very small soft dent on the rear wing, approximately 10 cm, which is hardly noticeable. The chrome work is clean and bright, showing only minor signs of wear. However, all rubber door seals are worn and will need replacing.

  • General condition:

This wonderfully appealing car can be easily returned to the road with a service and review. Its unique family ownership history from new adds to its charm and makes it even more special.

Owner's comment

This Opel Kapitän P1 Luxus was purchased new in the fall of 1958 by my grandfather, Gunnar Nilsson, from Bröderna Modins Bil in Varberg. It has remained in the family, driven only by my father, Gösta, my brother Tomas, and myself. The car has always been kept in a heated garage. In its early days, Gösta and Ingrid Nilsson took a trip to Östersund, but after passing Orsa, they had to return to replace the windshield due to a large stone chip. In 1960, Gunnar and Anna enjoyed a visit to Amsterdam and The Hague. The accompanying photo captures my grandfather Gunnar, grandmother Anna, and cousin Bertil in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1960.
