"Fresh and alert driving experience despite the car's age, technically speaking a surprisingly modern feel compared to much else from that time."

"Fresh and alert driving experience despite the car's age, technically speaking a surprisingly modern feel compared to much else from that time."

Description

It was imported to Sweden in the spring of 1980 by an Italian residing in Sweden who was in the industry through his involvement with Philipsons Automobil AB. He had the car partially renovated, and it was also turned over to a renowned Alfa workshop in Krylbo. The car then stood for many years at a museum in Nacka Strand, backed by Philipsons. When the museum was dismantled, the collection was sold and the current owner then bought the car. Right after the purchase in 1994, he took it down to a motor specialist in Helsingborg where it was determined that the engine was worn out and a new, more vigorous engine option was installed. Over the years, the owner has continuously repaired, improved, and maintained the car, despite its comparatively modest use. The latest and final approved inspection was carried out on May 4, 2016, the car was still in an approved period when the new regulations were introduced on April 20, 2018.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car does not have matching numbers, but a new engine was built in the 1990s from a factory-new block in a wooden crate for a 1300 Junior, featuring new rods, pistons, and cams. It starts quickly and easily, with a pleasant sound and a responsive engine and gearbox. No oil consumption or leakage. Since the engine rebuild/installation, the car has been driven very sparingly. It also has adjustable Spax dampers, refurbished brakes, and recently replaced bushings in the front suspension.

  • Interior condition:

The driver's seat is an aftermarket option, the original is still available. The car was available in various versions, with or without something that could be likened to a back seat. This is the simpler version with just a flat surface. Nice original door panels, the carpets are aftermarket. The original carpets are still there, they are worn, but are complete and work well as templates for a new set. Attractive wooden steering wheel and the original steering wheel is in one of the spare parts boxes. The heating unit, which has been dismantled for a long time, is also there.

  • Exterior condition:

Classic Alfa Rosso color and a beautiful shape. A row of filler bubbles are present on each rear fender, likely at the joint where the new fender was welded during the body restoration in the early eighties. The current owner had the car fully repainted again in the early 2000s, but to remove the old substrate work at the rear fenders, it needs to be ground down. Even though the bubbles are visible upon closer inspection, the car still presents a pleasant exterior appearance. Older stylish Michelin ZXZ tires with good tread.

  • General condition:

Nicely functioning vintage Alfa in a presentable condition for everyday use. It can be fixed in various ways according to personal taste, but nothing urgent and nothing that prevents it from being an enjoyable enthusiast Alfa.

Facts about the model

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was manufactured between 1954 and 1964. The name is a playful reference to William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, with Giulietta being the Italian diminutive form of Julia. The car was later succeeded by the Alfa Romeo Giulia. When Mussolini nationalized Alfa Romeo in the 1930s, the intent was to uphold Italian pride and ensure Alfa's continued presence on the racing circuit to compete with German rivals Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union. After World War II, the political landscape had changed, and new-era politicians preferred Alfa to focus on producing small cars for the people, rather than the handcrafted jewels it had previously contributed to the world. Alfa’s response was the Giulietta. Its engineering built upon Alfa's first post-war model, the larger 1900, featuring a monocoque body, a four-cylinder twin-cam engine, a four-speed transmission, independent front suspension with double wishbones, a solid rear axle, and coil springs all around, but in a smaller scale.

Unfortunately, Alfa lacked the resources for mass production, but they solved this issue by launching a national lottery, with the top prize being a new Giulietta. To heighten interest in the lottery, it wasn't an ordinary, plain Berlina that was at stake. Instead, it was a Bertone-designed Sprint. The hype around the lottery led them to focus on producing coupes, with the Sprint becoming the first Giulietta to enter production, while family breadwinners across Italy clamored for more practical cars. The situation was heading toward a potential scandal, but once production ramped up, the car's qualities silenced all critics. The young Nuccio Bertone was commissioned to design and build a four-seat coupe version for the lottery. The result was an exceptionally attractive model, with 27,100 units produced between 1954 and 1962. A more powerful Veloce version was available from 1956. The wheelbase measures 2.38 m. The Giulietta Sprint was a huge success for Bertone and marked a milestone in the company's continued development.
