Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts easily and runs smoothly. During the test drive, the car felt responsive with good acceleration. Everything related to the clutch, gears, brakes, etc., worked excellently.

  • Interior condition:

Nice light upholstery in excellent condition. Everything is intact and flawless. However, there is a small hole in the driver's side floor mat. All functions appear to work well, including BMW's Business CD.

  • Exterior condition:

Very nice and glossy paintwork that appears to be original, except for a repaint of the right door. Unfortunately, a motorcycle fell in the garage and damaged the door, but the work is very well done. There are also some minor stone chips. Nice wheels, although there is a small curb rash, with fine newer Yokohama tires. Engine and trunk areas are in very good condition. The soft top is tight with functioning electric operation.

  • General condition:

The car's performance, appearance, and condition make it a delightful sports car of its time. We remember the slogan: "When you love to drive." It still feels modern in many ways but has already spent twenty years on the road and is approaching classic and collector status with distinction.

Facts about the model

BMW has a long tradition of producing sporty and open-top models. In the 1930s and 1950s, there were several models with sporty ambitions for those seeking wind in their hair experiences. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, most of the cars were closed with sedan and coupe bodies, but they still had sport and GT aspirations, even if some received a roof chop. However, no true classic open two-seater sports car was manufactured. In 1989, BMW introduced a unique small car, the BMW Z1. The "Z" in its name stood for "zukunft," which is the German word for future. One of its most distinctive features was the unusual downward-sliding doors that disappeared into relatively high door sills. The Z1 was not a commercial success at the time but has since become a highly sought-after collector's item.

At a time when the Mazda MX-5 Miata was making waves by reintroducing the concept of a simple, small sports car reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s, it became clear that there was a market for small and spirited open-top cars. This development prompted many automakers to explore the segment. While the Z1 was unique and somewhat experimental, BMW saw potential in the market and decided to create the Z3, which debuted in 1995. The Z3 quickly gained popularity, and it even appeared in a James Bond film.

Following the success of the Z3, BMW continued to produce small, open-top sports cars, including the Z4. The first generation Z4 roadster (E85) was manufactured from 2003 to 2008. It featured a range of engines, from four-cylinder to six-cylinder units, with power outputs ranging from 150 to 343 horsepower. The larger 3.2-liter engine was reserved for the high-performance M version. The "regular" 3.0i six-cylinder engine produced 231 horsepower in the early years. Both manual and automatic six-speed transmissions were available.

In total, nearly 190,000 units of the E85 and E86 models (Z4 roadster and Z4 coupe) were produced.
