"Pleasant and enjoyable driving experience with a distinct new-car feel."

Description

It was delivered new to its first owner by a Volkswagen dealer in Santa Monica, LA, in July 1971. In the early 1990s, the car was imported to Germany, where a restoration was initiated. The body was rust-free and never required welding, but the owner lost interest. The next owner—who also ordered a Fahrzeug-Identitäts-Urkunde from the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen (pictured)—eventually gave up as well.

After that, Herr Walter Schultz took over and carried out a meticulous, uncompromising restoration, starting from a bare-metal body and chassis, enhanced with numerous new parts. The documentation folder contains receipts for an impressive and astonishing sum, reflecting that no expenses were spared.

Since its completion, the car has been driven just over 10,700 km. The current owner in Sweden, who purchased and imported it from Germany in 2017, has proudly enjoyed and driven the majority of this mileage as an enthusiast.

The most recent and final mandatory inspection (under current regulations) was successfully completed on July 28, 2017.

  • Mechanical condition:

Beautifully restored matching numbers 1600 50-horsepower engine with original specifications. When the car arrived in Sweden, it had a twin-carburetor setup, but the current owner has restored the fuel system to its original configuration, believing the engine now runs better. Additionally, the car is equipped with electronic ignition.

When the current owner purchased the car in Germany, it had larger, wider wheels and a lowered rear suspension. It has since been returned to its original 15" wheels, now fitted with newer Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, and the ride height has been adjusted back to factory specifications.

  • Interior condition:

Flawless and stylish interior, upgraded to leather, with only minor entry wear on the driver's side. The wooden steering wheel is also a period-correct accessory, now considered an exclusive original option.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was originally red, but when it was imported to Germany, it was repainted in its current factory color, Silbermetallic L 96 D. The paintwork is in beautiful condition, complemented by equally stunning, gleaming chrome.

The convertible top is like new, easy to operate, and features a heated glass rear window. There is a small mark on the left side of the rear bumper.

  • General condition:

Driven and carefully maintained with joy in recent years as a registered vehicle in Sweden by a dedicated Volkswagen enthusiast. The condition, documentation, and history come together to create an exemplary package.

Facts about the model

Production of the Karmann-Ghia Cabriolet began in 1957, just a year after its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The convertible version of the Type 14 was introduced in 1957, two years after the coupé. Over its production span, the model received a series of minor updates, including larger and more powerful engines, like the one in this auction car, as well as an upgraded interior—though never in leather.

Production continued until 1974, when it was effectively replaced by the Golf-based Scirocco sports coupé—a significant leap from an older design to a modern one.
