Description

Bil Bengtsson is a successful company that has been around for more than 90 years. Over the years, they have collected some cars that have been worth saving for the future. Now, as they are conducting a review of their collection and need to downsize due to space constraints, a number of interesting vehicles are being sold. Most of them have been standing for a while and require startup service and brake overhaul.

This PV joined the collection in 1979 and a renovation was started, including the purchase of 4 new sheet metal panels. The project was halted and has been untouched for several years. It is now being sold with the hope that someone will complete it, preferably an enthusiast.

Facts about the model

PV 444 is considered the Swedish people's car. The model was introduced in 1944, but production of the PV 444 A started in earnest in 1947. The design was inspired by American cars from the same period, primarily Pontiac, and the construction was led by Helmer Petterson (father of the sailor and designer Pelle P) and Erik Jern.

The PV 444 L from 1957, like this car, is the last model year of the PV 444. It features a new B16 engine, a modified rear axle with reaction struts, electric windshield wipers, a new grille with a large V emblem in the middle, small round turn signals in front replacing the previous side-mounted ones, new taillights with integrated turn signals and brake lights on the fenders, affectionately referred to as "maiden breasts," and seat belts offered as optional equipment. Production amounted to 64,087 L/LS (Special) units. In August 1958, the modernized PV 544 was introduced, which was produced until the introduction of the modern 140 series in the mid-1960s. The very last PV (544 G Sport) rolled off the production line at Volvo's Lundby facility on October 20, 1965, at 3:00 p.m., with chassis number 440,000. The last car was transported directly to the Volvo Museum.

What is especially fun about the '57 model is the enjoyable mix of old and new details. Now a proper Volvo engine and the last year with a split windshield, but a new grille that became standard on the 544 and the old instrument panel. The front turn signals are inwardly positioned, and a large gold-colored V (in brass) on the tailgate grille was only found on this car. The reason the gold V was only used for one year was that in a key US market, it was deemed too similar to the V that Chevrolet had on its cars to symbolize V8 engines. Chevrolet accused Volvo of trademark infringement, and Volvo had to remove this detail.

All of this makes the "PV '57" the most special PV model, according to many Volvo collectors.
