Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily, runs smoothly, and is stable during driving. It was not tested for long-distance driving, but everything seems reliable and functioning well.

There are minor begining of rust here and there, but the undercarriage appears to be in good condition without visible signs of rust. Inspection underneath has not been carried out.

  • Interior condition:

Original condition interior except for fabrics, which have been replaced. Nice seats, door sides and ceiling. Well functioning Blaupunkt Stereo. Nice carpets with some wear on the driver's side.

  • Exterior condition:

According to information, untouched and in original condition but the front fenders appear to have been replaced with newer paint on them and the hood. Otherwise, there is mild wear and patina after 50 years. Glass and chrome in great condition, new tires. Both the engine compartment and trunk are well-maintained and in good condition for its age.

  • General condition:

Classic car with well-known history and only one owner, in largely original condition makes this an interesting piece of automotive history. A pleasant car in good working condition with some patina - to use as is or to restore.

Facts about the model

Mercedes W115 was introduced in the 1967/68 model year and was produced until 1976. After the slightly larger previous model, the new, slightly smaller car quickly got the nickname "Kompakt". At the same time, the interior space was actually on par with previous models. The base models had 200 and 200D engines, with the latter becoming primarily a well-known and popular taxi worldwide. Then you could step up to the 220 and 220D versions.

Higher up in the lineup, the six-cylinder 230, 250, and 280 were added during the production years, the latter two with injection options. When they were equipped with six-cylinder engines, they had the model designation changed to W114.

Back to the W115, towards the end of the era, a larger diesel engine 240D was offered, and it was further topped by a five-cylinder diesel 240D 3.0 from July 1974.

Improvements were made continuously throughout the years. A larger upgrade was made for the 1974 model year, sometimes called Series 2. The cars then got a new front, new taillights and larger rearview mirrors, and the ventilation windows disappeared. A feature that existed in the new S-Class and the upcoming successor W123.

When Jan Ullén tested cars in his classic edition of Biltest 1972, the Mercedes W115 naturally qualified for the status category and won. Mercedes was considered to provide a rare combination of significant advantages without being particularly brilliant in any particular aspect. However, if you count points for genuine advantages such as road safety, space, and comfort, the car ends up with a score that exceeds any other car.

In summary, it can be said that it was simply a damn good car.
