"A delightful car from the 70s. Tradition and sensibility from the earlier decade, combined with improved safety and more modern technology from the latter. Featuring period-typical attributes and a wonderful color combination, this is a vehicle to enjoy both in and with. The well-preserved original condition is, moreover, the icing on the cake."

Description

A car with few owners and a low mileage of 61970 kilometers. The car was part of the collections at Sparreholm Car Museum starting from 2006. The latest owner, who worked with the collections, was able to purchase the car in 2017, becoming its fourth owner. It appears to have lived a peaceful life with two elderly owners up in the North of Sweden. Since arriving in Sörmland, it has not traveled many kilometers. It is completely in original condition with simple accessories such as rubber protection mats and an Eberspächer. A battery switch has been installed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has been stationary for a while but starts nicely and runs well. Newer battery. The fuel pump has just been renovated due to dry membranes after a long period of inactivity. The test drive was pleasant, and the car moved along in a well-known VW manner, bringing joy behind the wheel. Everything seems to work well, but as always with a car that has been sparingly driven, an inspection should be done. Not checked on a lift, but what could be seen looked good.

  • Interior condition:

The interior feels almost unused, with evident quality. Seats and rear seat are covered in nice fabric and have good resilience. Door cards are in good condition, as is the headliner. The storage area in the back is in lovely condition. There's some wrinkling around the rear window and a bit of moisture penetration at the lower corners of the rear window. The rubber mats, as well as the protective mats, are in good shape. Instrumentation, steering wheel, and controls are in fine condition. Everything appears to function. The plastic pull for the fuel door has broken off on one side of the loop, but it's no problem to open.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is fine and polished, likely original. There are signs of use such as a few small dents, stone chips, and scuffs. Glass, chrome, and rubber are also in good condition. The rims are in good condition with some scuffs and older Uniroyal tires. Both engine and trunk compartments are in fine condition. The engine is clean and neat, with intact water drainage caps, which is unusual. Good exhaust pipes. The trunk looks almost unused. Eberspächer kicks in but its function is uncertain and should be checked.
Fenders with body moldings are in good condition, as are the steps with rubber and chrome.

  • General condition:

Given that most of the remaining VW models from the early 70s are the upgraded 1302 version, this particular vehicle stands out. Significantly fewer were sold, making it rarer to find. In this condition, it is even more uncommon. Those models that retain a footing in the older tradition but with certain upgrades are often very appealing to enthusiasts and collectors. The condition, color combination, and execution make this one a delightful classic.

Facts about the model

The history of the Beetle is extensively documented, from the project's inception in the 1930s, how British soldiers restarted operations after World War II, and how the first cars made their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. So, let's quickly move forward to the early 70s. The later models of the VW Type 1 became increasingly powerful, featured larger trunk space, and included period-specific interior details for improved safety, such as built-in headrests. The 1302 model with a 50hp 1600 engine was introduced in 1971, replacing the outgoing 1500 model. This new top version received a McPherson strut front suspension, which provided more front luggage space, and an IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) rear. These upgrades improved handling and comfort. Meanwhile, VW retained the 1300 version with 44hp and traditional front suspension and appearance as an entry-level model. This simpler version received the same engine hood as the '02 models. While most chose the new top version, the traditional version also found its buyers.
