Description

This car was first registered for road use on May 25, 1972. The current owner acquired it in October 2010. Now living abroad, the car is being sold on his behalf by a close friend in Stockholm. Since the purchase, it has been driven sparingly and has mostly rested in the garage. It received a new paint job, a new convertible top, refurbished wheels and tires, and a mechanical overhaul. Road-ready.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran smoothly and calmly in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in Vasastan, the steering, handling, clutch, gearbox, and brakes all appeared to function well. The car was recently serviced and prepared for sale by the well-regarded workshop Autotjänst E. Vogel in Vasastan.

It hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but a visual check of the vital components showed nothing of concern. No remarks from the Swedish vehicle inspection authority (Bilprovningen).

  • Interior condition:

Nice original interior with typical wear consistent with age and mileage. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are also in good condition, with all electrical functions working properly. The front panel for the car radio was missing at the time of inspection. Carpets are in great shape.

  • Exterior condition:

Attractive, newer two-tone paintwork and a nicely renewed soft top. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems, rubber/plastic, and lighting components are all in well-preserved condition. Fitted with stylish EMPI alloy wheels and quality tires. Both engine and luggage compartments are clean and well-kept. The Eberspächer heater is present, though its functionality is uncertain.

  • General condition:

Lively and full of summer vibes through and through, in fine condition with all functions appearing to work well. A Beetle Cabriolet always draws attention and admiration. A beautiful classic and enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

After Beetle production got underway, open-top versions were introduced starting in 1949. Several variants were produced—both two- and four-seaters—but it was the Karmann-built versions that ultimately prevailed. Their four-seater convertibles were crafted with impressive precision and high-quality materials right from the start, especially evident in the convertible top design, which was robust enough for year-round use—even in winter.

The open-top Beetles developed largely in parallel with their hardtop counterparts. Later VW Type 1 models became increasingly powerful, with larger luggage compartments and period-correct safety features such as integrated headrests.

For the 1971 model year, the 1302 LS was introduced with a 1600cc engine producing 50 hp. In 1972, one of the main updates was the addition of more horizontal cooling slots in the engine lid—now 26 in total. Otherwise, that year brought few changes.

In 1973, the 1303 LS was introduced, featuring a completely new dashboard and a curved panoramic windshield. Exterior updates included larger taillights and a redesigned fuel filler cap with a finger grip.

The last LS models were imported into Sweden in 1974, and the final new Cabriolet was sold in the country the following year. Although VW ceased Beetle production in Germany in 1978, Karmann continued producing the Cabriolet version until 1980.

Despite being a very different car from its 1940s origins, the spirit and feeling remained familiar over those 30+ years. But by then, the future had arrived—and it was time for the Golf Cabriolet to take over. That, however, is a different story altogether.
