"When these transport vehicles started appearing on our roads over 35 years ago, they received a lot of attention and became popular. Today, many of these vehicles have been well-used and are starting to disappear from our roads. When such a “workhorse” appears with a fine history of having the same owner/user who has taken good care of it and driven it sparingly, it is more than noteworthy. Isn’t this the kind of practical resource that we motor and hobby enthusiasts dream of owning?"

Description

The current owner, who ordered the car and had it delivered by Solstad in November 1998, has been involved in the motor history hobby for over 60 years. Numerous classic vehicles have passed through his hands over the years, and he thought it would be practical to have his own vehicle for transporting both objects and historical treasures. Solstad, which specialized in building custom transport vehicles for B licenses, with a load capacity of 1700-2000 kg and no other speed limits than the normal road limits, was hired. With Solstad’s contacts at Saab, a Saab 900 was taken off the production line for this purpose. He settled for a “standard” 2.0L version with a five-speed gearbox and standard specifications, including heated seats. He also had specific requests for a narrower bed than those built previously, to ensure a more maneuverable vehicle that could fit in and out of his garage. This is where the vehicle has spent its time when not used for transport runs. The odometer now reads 2,883 miles. Besides being stored in the garage, the vehicle has never been used in winter. This, combined with the enthusiastic owner, means the vehicle is in excellent Saab/Solstad original condition. The bed has carried everything from Italian thoroughbreds to stately British aristocrats. Also included is a wooden frame to transport a wider car, as seen in the owner’s photos. Other useful items included are: extra keys, six steel wheels with bolts, bearings for the swing axles, and oil filters.

Additionally, the vehicle comes with a binder containing the entire history of the order, construction, correspondence, receipts, inspection protocols, etc. Interestingly, Saab removed the chassis number when the car was taken off the production line, and the owner was given his first name as the chassis identification.

The vehicle is inspected and ready to drive. Approved load weight is 1,870 kg. Dimensions: 755 cm long and 226 cm wide, with the bed from the winch box backward measuring 415 cm x 177 cm.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in the engine and drivetrain. The steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes are responsive and well-functioning. During the test drive, it felt easy to drive despite the bed. No rattling or other noises during normal driving in residential areas (with speed bumps). The owner, an industrial designer with technical expertise and handy skills, has meticulously maintained the vehicle. It always receives compliments for the undercarriage during inspections. The winch and air suspension for the rear bed (adjustable height) work well. The bed, cargo protection, and ramps, etc., are in well-preserved condition.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in excellent original condition, with intact and comfortable seats, door panels, carpeting, headliner, dashboard, steering wheel, and controls all in well-preserved original condition. All electrical components and functions operate as they should. There is a warning light for a faulty bulb that has always been on, but there is no actual issue with any bulbs. Equipped with a Pioneer radio/cassette player and rubber protective mats.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paintwork in excellent and shiny condition with stripes, with a small paint crack a few centimeters on the driver’s side. The glass, rubber, plastic, and lighting details are in good original condition, as is the chrome. The aluminum wheels are in great condition, and the tires are relatively new. The engine bay is in fine original condition.

  • General condition:

These cars were well-noted when they were built and appreciated for their functionality and usability. Solstad’s builds are solid. Today, in this condition with a relatively unique ownership history, this car is both a practical transport vehicle and a fine classic, as well as a vehicle of significant motor historical interest.

Facts about the model

Under the ownership of General Motors, Saab was able to develop a completely new 900 model, which was sold under the same model designation as the previous model. This new generation, often called Generation II or NG (New Generation), was manufactured between 1993 and 1998. This version differed significantly from the first generation Saab 900 but still retained many Saab attributes in its design. The car was offered as a hatchback with 3 or 5 doors, and later, a convertible was also introduced. The platform was sourced from the Opel Vectra, which meant the engine was now transverse, unlike its predecessor. The new model received much praise initially for its road characteristics, interior, driver environment, and luggage space, although the back seat was considered cramped. After some time, however, some criticism arose due to initial problems, but many of these issues were addressed over the years. When the next generation, model 9-3, was introduced, Saab's mid-range car improved significantly.

Solstad, founded by Robert Solstad, began by modifying cars in an old dairy in Röke outside Hässleholm. The first car was a Saab 99, which was converted into a car transporter in 1987. Eventually, the company established direct contact and contracts with Saab. Other car brands were also used, and Solstad built ambulances, newspaper cars, animal ambulances, car transporters, hearses, and police cars. Among other things, they built a Saab 9000 estate for Bert Karlsson. The company later moved to new premises in Högsby, and the business expanded. However, towards the end of the 90s, various circumstances led to the company having to close down. A few years ago, Robert Solstad and his sons restarted the business on a smaller scale.
