"The car has just received a full startup service, which included draining the fuel tank, cleaning the carbs, checking the electrics, fuel, and brakes, and installing a new battery. It runs and drives really nicely when warmed up properly, although a carb tune-up might be needed. It requires a final inspection, which should be easy to pass."

Description

This car is originally Swedish-sold and has had a total of five registered owners. The current owner bought it in 2001 and has taken care of it for over 23 years, driving it around Scotland and on many summer trips around Sweden. In 2014 the gearbox and clutch have been renovated. Brake lines along the driveshaft tunnel have been replaced. New rear suspension, among other things. It has been serviced every year by the owner. The car was garaged after 2016 and was recently serviced last week, bringing it back up and running. It features an older renovation and repaint, likely done in the 1980s, which has held up really well.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car runs and drives well, with the engine, gearbox, and brakes performing nicely once warmed up to operating temperature. The carburetor might need an adjustment, but most older MGs experience similar issues when cold. The speedometer needle also bounces around. It has attractive wheels with chrome hubs and good older tires.

  • Interior condition

Interior is nice and clean, featuring bucket seats similar to those in the MGA, a clean dashboard, and nice gauges. The carpets are in good condition, though they are a little loose in places and just need regluing. The car comes with a clip-on roof and frame in good condition, with just a small hole (see picture). Additionally, a clip-on tonneau cover is included, which is much easier to use.

  • Exterior condition

The bodywork is clean and undamaged, with no notable rust issues. The floors and underbody are solid and free from damage. The paintwork is clean and shiny, with a few small scratches, chips, and a small blister on the wing (see pictures). The chrome work all around is shiny, but there are rust blisters on the rear bumper corner.

  • General condition

This fun car is a joy to drive and is cheap and easy to maintain, making it a great summer car for anyone to enjoy.

Facts about the model

The model is based on the Austin Healey Sprite (frog eye) from the late 1950s. At that time, BMC was in the process of rationalizing its model lineup by using common bodies and components across the board. As a result, the Sprite now received a twin model in the form of the MG Midget, identical except for the radiator grille and chrome strips on the sides and hood. The interiors differ in some details such as seat upholstery and instruments. In the Sprite, instruments from Smith were installed, while in the Midget they were from Jäger (although also made by Smith). The two models are commonly referred to together as “Spridget.”

In spring 1961, the car was modified with a completely new front and rear. The front now had a more ordinary appearance than before, and the rear was equipped with a lockable trunk lid and tail lights borrowed from the soon-to-be-launched MGB. The cockpit was extended and gained space behind the seats. The engine remained at 948cc but was updated with, among other things, larger twin SU carburetors and a few more horsepower. From October 1962, a minor number of updates were introduced: a larger engine at 1098cc, strengthened gearbox, front disc brakes, updated rear brakes, and slightly renewed interior. This updated model also featured sheet metal wheels without the drilled classic ventilation holes from earlier models. With the update, the Midget changed its model code from GAN1 to GAN2, and the Sprite changed from HAN6 to HAN7.
