Glennster S-12 — 1935

A mighty creation, inspired by the Mercedes GP racer W25, which was active in 1934-35. This car, a unique build, deviates from the conventional path and is uncompromising in ensuring that the components are period-correct.

Description

Creator Glenn Billqvist, together with his father Kalle, is responsible for a collection of exciting and crazy cars, all inspired by the Art Deco era between the First and Second World Wars. This car, called Glennster S-12, took seven years to build between 2013 and 2019. It began with a frame from a 1928 Buick, and a side-valve V12 engine from a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr was ready for installation. The large drum brakes in the front come from a 1924 Delage, and the rear brakes are from the same car as the engine, a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr. Additionally, the engine is fed by a Marchal 200K supercharger, also a 1930s design, and a newly renovated 3-speed gearbox from Ford. The car has been driven in numerous competitions and exhibitions across Europe, including in Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, and several races in Sweden such as the Prins Bertil Memorial, Gasoline Revival Grängesberg, Jakriborg Prix, and Autoseum Oldtimer. The competitions have included regularity, hill climbs, and high-speed races such as the standing kilometer in St. Moritz, Kilomètre Lancé, where the car reached over 170 km/h. Glenn has also driven it at Sweden’s Ring Knutstorp, but only for demonstration purposes.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It sounds like an airplane. The sound from a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr side-valve V12 is thrilling with straight pipes and sharper heads from Austin Speed Equipment, supercharged with a Marchal 200K, and paired with a gearbox from Ford, all rooted in the 1930s. It takes a lot of expertise to get everything working together seamlessly, and Glenn’s father, Kalle, did the engine work.

  • Interior condition:

Spartan cockpit, as it should be. The instruments, steering wheel, and leather seat cushion are all in 1930s style. There are many details to get lost in and enjoy. The driver’s seat has some limitations; drivers over 1.75 meters might find it a bit cramped for their legs, says Glenn, who himself is 1.76 meters tall.

  • Exterior condition:

All the bodywork is made of aluminum. The workshop where the car was created is filled with metalworking tools, presses, English wheels, benders, cutters, and everything needed to shape aluminum sheets into something beautiful. The Glennster S-12 almost looks best with the hard twin-mount wheels at the back (as on the original cars from the 1930s) for hill climb races, but they can, of course, be removed and driven with a single mount. Everywhere on the car, you will find beautiful details and solutions.

  • General condition:

A buyer will naturally receive thorough training on the car from the builder, Glenn, and the opportunities for a new owner are numerous. The car is perfect for exhibitions, of course, but the real fun lies in its drivability and the ability to really hit the gas.
