"A well-functioning vehicle where most things are as they should be—as intended back in 1970—but which has received a repaint along the way. It presents in solid driver condition, with wear consistent with its age and mileage. One of the front seats has been replaced, and there are some details that could benefit from attention."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on June 22, 1970. The current owner acquired it on July 25, 2022. He and his family were looking for a classic car, and—like many who grew up with a Volvo Amazon—they chose this blue example. It's been used for a few outings and the occasional car meet, always kept in a garage and running well.

During his ownership, the seller has done oil changes and addressed the brakes on one rear side. However, with an upcoming move to the city and limited garage access, the car is now being offered for sale.

The current odometer reading is 11,540 km, though it’s believed to have rolled over twice, making the likely total around 211,540 km—though this cannot be guaranteed. Based on records, it seems the car has only covered about 300 km in the past ten years.

Included with the car are a copy of the original registration, a box of spare parts, and a workshop manual. Two ignition keys are provided, along with a separate set for the doors and trunk. Recently inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. During a gentle test drive in a residential area, the steering, clutch, gearbox, brakes, and handling all appeared to function well.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but from what was visible, key components and functions seemed sound. No remarks regarding the underbody were noted in the most recent vehicle inspection (Bilprovning).

  • Interior condition:

The interior shows some wear, and the driver’s seat has been replaced with an older model lacking a headrest—though the original headrest is included. The headliner is in good condition, with minor discoloration near the base of the C-pillars. Door panels and rubber floor mats are in decent shape, though there is some wear, particularly on the driver's side flooring.

Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition, with a small crack on the top edge of the dashboard. All electrical functions appear to work properly, and the vintage radio is functioning.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been repainted and presents well, showing typical wear and patina consistent with its age and mileage. Around the wheel arches, sills, and rear edges, there are areas with some surface irregularities. Paint residue can be seen on rubber trim in places.

This model year originally did not come with chrome on the drip rails, but such trim has been added—one clip is missing on the driver’s side. Chrome, glass, trim, and lighting elements are in good condition overall, with light patina and minor blemishes.

The wheels are in good shape with some scuffing, fitted with trim rings and good tires. Auxiliary driving lights are installed. Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are in typical condition for the car’s age and mileage.

  • General condition:

There’s work to be done—the next owner will set the bar. Drive it as-is or improve it gradually over time. Either way, this is a historically interesting car from the era when “Volvo, villa, and vovve” (dog) was a way of life.

Parked in front of a brick-clad suburban home, this classic and enthusiast vehicle evokes a warm sense of 1960s/70s nostalgia.

Facts about the model

Much has been written about the Volvo Amazon—one of Sweden’s most cherished classic cars.

Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with clear Italian influences, it was Volvo’s answer to the so-called “ponton” body style that defined the 1950s. Produced from 1956 through 1970 (model years 1957–1970), the Amazon made history in 1959 by becoming the world’s first mass-produced car to come standard with front seat three-point safety belts.

The famously durable B18 engine, producing 75 hp, was introduced for the 1962 model year. In 1965, several updates arrived: a new grille, redesigned seats and interior, and new vented wheels with updated hubcaps.

For the 1969 model year, the Amazon 121 was equipped with the larger B20A engine—2.0 liters and 82 DIN hp. That year also brought improved brakes and safety features, many borrowed from the newer 140 series. However, some cosmetic features were removed, like the chrome drip rails and hood trim. The final production years saw relatively few changes. New colors were added in 1969, including Mellanblå (Mediterranean Blue), carried over from the 140 series.

By the time the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and a total of 667,332 units built. It was offered in two-, four-, and five-door variants, ranging from basic versions to sporty Sport and GT models.

A Swedish icon and an enduring piece of motoring history.
