Volvo 244 2.3 — 1990

A surprisingly discreet and enjoyable classic to drive, achieved without the aid of a truck-sized turbocharger or an oversized engine. Instead, it features a beautifully sounding and highly responsive naturally aspirated engine with elegant intake trumpets.

"Every now and then they appear — the small, tastefully interpreted gems based on the cheerful and sensible everyday car that for many years was Sweden’s best-selling model, and which later earned the racing world nickname The Flying Brick. An inspiring journey and reputation that still resonates with many enthusiasts today."

Description

It was delivered new to its first owner in April 1990 and has had relatively few long-term owners since. The current owner originally bought the car as an inexpensive daily driver, but before long he felt compelled to tidy it up, improve it, and make it truly nice. As so often happens in enthusiast circles, the project gradually evolved into something much more.
The car’s complete specification has been thoroughly detailed by the owner below under “Owner’s Comments.” Both the owner and the car share a certain humility. In the car’s case, that understated nature could perhaps be described as a sleeper, but it is also something more — a kind of quiet dignity.
The speedometer has been replaced and was not adjusted to reflect the previous mileage, meaning the odometer currently shows approximately 40,000 km less than the car’s actual distance traveled. As a result, a note regarding this appears in the official records.
The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2025-08-04.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Beneath the hood — neatly finished on the inside in white and semi-matte black — lies a classic-looking engine bay highlighted by four beautifully styled intake trumpets. A lightened and carefully balanced flywheel, matched to the engine’s output and torque, allows the engine to meet gear changes with remarkably smooth and effortless precision regardless of revs or speed.
The chassis and brakes also appear to be very well tuned in relation to both the car’s understated exterior appearance and its actual performance capabilities.

  • Interior condition

An especially attractive interior featuring custom-made leather upholstery gives the cabin a refined and elegant impression. The front seats are sourced from a Volvo S60. The owner is currently searching for the plastic side covers, but says it is difficult to find complete and well-preserved pieces in the correct color.

  • Exterior condition

Clean, straight, and well-presented in both bodywork and paint. The glass is in good condition, and the front electric windows function properly. Built to be driven and enjoyed, the owner has also used it as a daily driver during certain periods.
The car is fitted with undamaged 7-inch Volvo Polaris replica wheels from Eiker, wrapped in newer Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

  • General condition

Executed with thoughtfulness and taste, both usable and entertaining, while also possessing a subtle and tasteful overall character that is difficult to define — all presented in a highly respectable condition.

Facts about the model

The 1990 Volvo 240 represents the final and most refined era of the long-lived model. By this point, the 240 series — originally launched in 1974 — had been in production for 16 years and had achieved the status of an “enduring classic.”
For the 1990 model year, several specific improvements were introduced to keep the model up to date. A driver’s airbag was offered as an option for the first time, while the 245 wagon received a new, larger bonded rear window and the previously exposed tailgate hinges were replaced with a more modern concealed design. The sedan model (244) was given a revised rear light layout.
Inside, the seats and headrests were updated, and the door panels featured more fabric trim. Heated front seats became standard equipment, controlled via switches located beside the handbrake, and the speedometer was converted to a fully electronic system using a sensor mounted in the rear axle.
