"The excitement is always the same when opening the doors to a countryside barn. Here we find a Mercedes-Benz that has fared remarkably well over the years—a car that is definitely worth restoring. The journey toward solid roadworthy condition shouldn’t be too long or too difficult."

Description

This car was originally sold new to the current owner's father in the autumn of 1970. The car was driven by the father for approximately 20 years and was then taken off the road in the autumn of 1990. It has not been driven for around 35 years since. The car has been stored in a dry and well-ventilated barn up to the present day and is relatively rust-free. There is rust on the wheel arches and in the right front fender. It was very dusty during inspection in poor lighting conditions, so there may be additional minor damages to the car. From what we can see, the bodywork looks straight and in good shape.

The underside has not been inspected, so a few poor-quality photos will have to show what can be seen. No visible rust in the floor or trunk area as far as we can tell in the dim light.

When gripping the fan blades firmly, we assess that the engine turns over.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

It is difficult to assess the condition of the engine and gearbox, as well as all other technical functions of the car. A complete brake system overhaul is of course a must. The mileage cannot be guaranteed, and it is hard to say whether the odometer has rolled over once or more.

  • Interior condition

The interior is complete and, with a thorough detailing, should come out really well. The seats, carpets, and headliner are all intact. The panels are relatively undamaged. The left front door panel is very dirty.

  • Exterior condition

Beneath all the dust, the paintwork appears to be in very good condition, aside from the rust issues previously mentioned. The body panels are straight and in good shape. The chrome, glass, and lighting fixtures seem to be in decent, usable condition. The wheels are fine, but the tires are worn out. The exhaust system looks okay but has come loose from its mountings. As typical for a Mercedes, the car feels solid when closing the doors.

  • General condition

Overall, the car gives a good general impression. It is absolutely possible to get this car back on the road. Bringing it to a usable condition should not be too big of a task for a skilled enthusiast.

Owner's comment

This family car, which has been in our possession for over fifty years, deserves to be cared for by someone who will give it a new lease on life.

Facts about the model

Mercedes-Benz W115 – A Solid Classic with Great Potential

The Mercedes-Benz W114/115 series was produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 1967 to December 1976. Often referred to in marketing as the “/8” (German: Strich Acht), referencing the 1968 model year, this generation was also known as the “Kompakt” due to its slightly smaller and neater exterior dimensions compared to the W110. Despite its more compact size, it offered comparable—and in some areas even greater—passenger space, though at the cost of some luggage capacity.

This particular car was originally sold new to the current owner's father in the autumn of 1970. It was driven by him for about 20 years before being taken off the road in the autumn of 1990. Since then, it has been in storage for approximately 35 years, kept dry and well-ventilated in a barn. It remains relatively rust-free, with rust mainly found around the wheel arches and the right front fender. It was inspected under poor lighting and was very dusty, so minor additional damage may exist. The body panels appear straight and in good condition.

The engine turns over when the fan blades are gripped firmly, but the condition of the engine and gearbox—as well as other technical components—remains unknown. A full brake system overhaul will of course be necessary. The odometer reading cannot be verified, and it is unclear whether it has rolled over one or more times.

The interior is complete and has good potential. With a thorough cleaning and detailing, it should come out very nicely. The seats, carpets, and headliner are intact, and the interior panels are mostly undamaged, though the left front door panel is particularly dirty.

Underneath the dust, the paint looks quite good, apart from the previously mentioned rust spots. The chrome, glass, and light fixtures are in usable condition. The wheels are in decent shape, but the tires are worn out. The exhaust system appears intact but has come loose from its mountings. As expected from a Mercedes, the doors close with a solid and reassuring feel.

Overall, the car gives a good general impression and certainly has the potential to be put back on the road. For a skilled enthusiast, bringing it back to a usable condition should not be an overwhelming task.
