Description

Considered by many as Volvo's most beautiful car. Designed by Pelle Petterson in the late 1950s. Produced from 1961 to 1972. Replaced by the ES wagon model in 1972. Production ceased in 1973 mainly due to new crash safety regulations in the USA (with thicker bumpers).

The car was last inspected in 1986 and has been off the road since then. The current owner has equipped the car with refurbished wheels and new tires.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car has not been started as it has been stationary for a very long time.

  • Interior condition:

Not entirely complete. For instance, the back seat is missing. The interior is in need of restoration.

  • Exterior condition:

All trim, moldings, grille, and similar parts are in place and in relatively good condition. The bumpers are somewhat rusty but seem to have held up quite well. The body requires extensive bodywork. Aluminum wheels with poor tires are included.

  • General condition:

In simple terms, the decay has progressed quite far. On the plus side, the availability of parts - both old and newly manufactured - is quite good.

Facts about the model

Volvo's most beautiful car according to many. Designed by Pelle Petterson in the late 1950s. Built from 1961 to 1972. Replaced by the ES wagon model in 1972. Production ceased in 1973 primarily due to new crash safety regulations in the USA (with thick bumpers).
During the first two years, the cars were assembled in England, at Jensen. Afterward, they were built in Torslanda and were given the additional "S" to signify Swedish-built, primarily to indicate that they were now being produced in Sweden. "Made in Sweden" was a quality mark at the time, which the English-built models perhaps didn't quite live up to. So from April, it became the 1800S. First, as a few months' production for the 1963 model year. Then for the 1964 model year. No major changes. However, for the 1965 model year, some changes were made, just like with other Volvo cars. A new radiator grille, full front bumpers, new wheels, and hubcaps were introduced. For the 1966 model year, they received higher engine output through a new exhaust manifold, a new exhaust system, front suspension permanently lubricated, and improved rear wheel suspension. It also marked the last year with the characteristic upturned side trim on the doors. The 1966 model year was produced in 4,500 units.
A total of approximately 36,000 cars were built.
